The problem with that is that there are too many variable to factor in. A teacher who sees a kid for 45 minutes a day isn't always capable of overcoming all the other factors the effect a child's growth. Performance based pay is actually the absolute worst thing that could happen to poverty stricken districts. You could be the gawd of teaching and still have poor results in some districts. There would be even less of a reason for competent teachers to work in these districts.

Well the implication has been proven but a causal relationship is too complex. We should be attracting the best and brightest to be teachers though. With starting pay at 12-20k no one of real talent will bat an eye. You dont think that at those pay rates the incentive for a good student to be a teacher is diminished.

In terms of teacher pay though, I think teachers should be offered more but the current ones have benefited from a broken system.

Agreed, far too many teacher's have benefited from the old system, but things are changing. Like any government agency, though, change is slow.

I just think its unfair to characterize all teachers as glorified babysitters. Its a very difficult, unrewarding job that doesn't get nearly the amount of respect it deserves.

I agree. You can't just categorize ALL teachers as a bunch of lazy fukks who just want to benefit from a strong union or "babysit kids". Most of the teachers I've met legitimately want to instruct and teach children to better them. The problem isn't the teachers, it's the current educational system, which CONTINUES to lose funding every year, and no one gives a flying fukk. The gov can buy more missiles and drones but can't throw some money to help improve innercity schools. and I agree that it's a little hard to gauge teacher performance, but I know this sounds crazy, JUST ASK THE STUDENTS. We can all name the great teachers from our highschool and we all can name the shytty ones too.

Teaching is the only profession where you can get paid regardless of performance and outcomes. So many shytty teachers go to the schools in the inner city and keep their seat warm until retirement. While the good ones get burnt out and move on to another profession.

I agree with this but as someone that taught for 5 years in a shytty Atlanta public school system, the weak ass bureaucracy and spoils system corruption above creates those conditions you described...I've seen it with my own eyes and it killed my final year at the school...Miss the students but glad to be out of the system that spends so much time teaching memorization to create robotic wage laborers

It's the system and the way govt funding works that creates the abject failure of public education. I learned this interning at the GAO. There is a financial incentive to not doing your job in the govt, but if anything there is a financial disincentive to doing a good job. When things are going well, funding gets cut. When things are fukked up, they continue to throw money at it. As long as the inner city schools are fukked up, the administrators can keep coming back asking for money and enrich themselves and their cronies.

Youre right. I did the great teachers I have had an injustice by making that classification. Great teachers have impacted my life more positively than I can quantify.

Who says teachers don't make a lot of money??????? All the teachers I know make a respectable living.....especially considering all the time they get off plus their generous benefits and pensions.

You should say that to the next teacher you meet. I'm sure you'll finally lose your virginity.

Paying teachers more is something that most people agree on.

Why it hasnt happened yet is what I want to know.

Well education is mostly covered by state and local governments via state and property taxes. Next, it is easy to become a teacher long as one doesn't have a record or multiple arrests (I do so I cannot even Sub, their loss) and a college degree. That affects supply indirectly. There would never be a shortage because it is less stringent. We have checks and balances so that money to pay them more has to come from somewhere, right? The teachers that last aren't stressing themselves out or wholeheartedly care about their students. Gotta be that way to stay sane.

So because its easy to be a teacher they shouldnt be paid more?

Sounds like a way for people to fool themselves into thinking that teachers dont deserve more pay more so than finding an actual reason.

You think that teaching those kids all of the time is easy? Think again. :bryan:
