That's a skill issue - if you can't craft emotional songs because you're a unmotivated purist then that's a huge knock.

Canibus cannot ever write anything like Lupe's greatest verses, he doesn't have the skillset, he simply can't do it.

He can write his ass off but he's not a complete artist at this point. Great lyrics, solid albums, interesting concepts, still he's seemingly not interested in making hit records. He's too hard to digest for the average listener.

Comparing him to the obvious Kendrick doesn't have the same lyrical ability but can make hit records and still somewhat managed to challenge his listeners mentally. He's the artist Lupe should have been but refused to be.

To be the best others gotta recognize it not just you and your niche fans.

Jigga and Esco recognize it champ. So does Joe Budden and Royce and many others who are on record saying he's not human, lol.

.....prime mos def was way better at storytelling and painting a picture with words. Not to mention a way better flow and mic presence. Lupe doesn't have this level of imagination. Mos def didn't need to be a cringey try hard to get his point across. Because he understood that would serve nobody but himself.

Thieves in The Night is top 3 for me from Black Star - but this isn't head and shoulders above any above-average Lupe song.

To be the best in a form of media you need to put it all together. He's one of my most listen to artist in the past 6 or so years so not a hater. He's also can't really reach past hardcore fans. In terms of putting pen to the pad and writing lyrics he's peerless. In terms of making music that reaches and touches a lot of people and entertains them he leaves a lot to be desired.
