Why isn't the Army suspending tuition assistance not national news?

I heard they aren't even going to bring the troops back from Afghanistan, they're just going to leave them there till they run out of supplies and get swarmed.

Too big? Breh I have like 5 jobs that are not in my duty title. My flight used to have over 90 people. Now we have less than 30. The work is still there but I'm doing more of it. Not only that, I have to be proficient in every duty that I have. I can't ask for a raise or quit. There are no labor laws stopping me from work 18 hour days in theater. We've been making cuts for years and doing more with less.

exactly. i joined the coast guard shortly after 9/11 and our mission has grown dramatically since, while at the same time being moved to the the department of homeland security and watching our budget shrink. we barely having more members than the NYPD, but yet we're in charge of search and rescue, maritime law enforcement, illegal migrant interdiction, fisheries enforcement, port security (domestic and foreign war theaters), vessel traffic services, marine pollution cleanup, drug interdiction, vessel compliance inspections, and marine mammal rescue. all while operating one the oldest naval fleets in the world.

the coast guard is already undermanned and a couple of weeks ago the commandant said we need to cut 5,000 jobs due to budget constraints :mindblown: if the american public really knew how much the actual military member was doing without on a daily basis instead of only being focused on the pentagon budget and how many f14 fighter jets and m1 tanks they spend billions on, they would be appalled. just yesterday my supervisor told us that the last time the gov't was having budget disputes back in the day, the first thing to go was supplies, so we may want to keep a couple of rolls of tiolet paper in our cars :why:

they'll never touch the g.i. bill because service members actually pay into it. you know how much the gov't would have to pay if they gave nearly every service member his/her $1600 dollars back?? :mindblown:

nobody's looking for a handout. everyone recognizes that the defense budget is bloated, but its not bloated because of member services. its the spending on fighter jets and tanks we don't need because war isn't fought like that anymore. if they want to cut back on some of the R&D stuff and get rid of no-bid contracts, i'm all for that, but the individual service member shouldn't be made to suffer nad if they are the impact should be minimal.

TYRONE GA!
Everybody wants the government to spend less and then cries about it when the cuts go into effect.

It needs to come from those bloated ass defense contracts/contractors monies. But nah, let's fukk over the dudes who are really put their lives on the line for us.

:ohhh:

the civilians i work with make twice, some situations thrice what i make in base pay for doing the same job. the only reason our end of the month take home pay is somewhat similar is those housing, sustenance, sea duty, and hazardous duty (war zone) allowances we receive. could you afford to live in an east coast city on 25-35k?? neither can we. that's we get cost of living benefits based on where we're stationed. i look at like this. the military is a complete meritocracy. you can't network your way into a cushy 6 figure job the way you can in civilian life. civilians may not get the same benefits we get, but they have more earning power. its a fair trade-off in my eyes.

:ohhh:
They also take none of the same risks. But that's obvious. To say we're looking for hand outs is fukking absurd. We fukking work. Hard. My technical knowledge alone says that I should be making double. When I'm deployed, I work 17-18 hour days routinely. But we do it. The service members are taking the brunt of this. Do you remember a few years ago when Congress couldn't come to a decision on the budget and the government threatened to shut down? They were saying that even if we didn't receive our paycheck checks because of the shut down that we still had to report to work or be charged with dereliction of duty! How many civies would go to work without pay, let alone stand for getting charged with a crime for it.

I know GI bill aint going anywhere. If they took that away minus the few fools that get into trouble and use the military to straighten up, why would anybody join in the first place?

The Anti-George Lucas Coalition
Big Blue got the cut today.

Remember, if Congress can reach an agreement on cuts to replace Sequestration that's a little lighter on the DoD's side (or more targeted towards R&D, the F-35, etc.) than TA could be reinstated.

But that's a big "if". :sadcam:

I just had a deployment "delayed until further notice" the day before I was supposed to leave (and we deploy as a whole unit/fleet). Curious to see if they're just not going to rotate people out now or what...? Short notice extension of deployments from 6 months to 8+ like the Army now? :whoa:
