Why isn't the Army suspending tuition assistance not national news?

Well, the good news from that article is that I finally get a pay raise again. But Congress should not get one....for ten years. In fact a pay cut is in order. What the fukk do they do that is equal to 175k per year. fukk those guys.

The Navy still has TA :whew:

But budget cuts are gonna hurt this year, especially with the civilian services for the Navy.

At least on our base:

We have to do our own landscaping... no more civilians cutting the grass.
Military Police actually doing their job... rather than having civilian guards at the gates.
Gym hours being cut down.
Construction projects being delayed.
Government buildings being hot as hell in the summer, and cold in the winter to save energy.
No more going to that ticket office to get discounts to amusement parks, trips... etc.

A lot more shyt was listed, but thats all I remember right now.

you know they aint cutting their salary, or their expensive ass banquets, or their personal flights, or their 8 personal assistants, or their thousand dollar suits...

yeah because these account for a considerable part of the budget. :beli: if we're not talking about cutting medicare, medicad, social security or defense, we might as well not talk.

if you search and read there are more articles like that that say the marines and maybe air force are/have done it also. i felt like i was doing a research paper trying to find as much info as possible. which is why i made the thread i figured it would be covered by msn, nbc, foxnews, abc, cbs, cnn but the articles are from nbclatino and then a bunch of local news websites around the country.

So basically for now on if you join the Army you can use the GI Bill Benefits to pay for school...and that's only after you serve your 4 years?

But in the article dude had already sent all of his GI Bill Benefits to his wife and was gonna use the tuition assistance program

He was going to use TA for either an associates or toward a bachelors. You can use a GI Bill toward grad school but not TA. TA will only pay out up to $250 a credit hour and they cap at like 4500-5000 a year. So for him to go to school he would still need to be in the service and also would have to pay out of pocket (for books, and depending on how long he wants to go to school obviously if he takes 4 classes a quarter (impossible if he's in the service) he can finish a degree quicker but he's also paying more out of pocket)

It's not like military personnel are rolling in dough. The civilian workers/contractors often make several times what their uniformed counterparts make.

This.

I'm in the AF and I think its disgraceful. The only reason a lot of people joined the military is for the educational opportunities. There are things that you have to deal with in the military that civilians wouldnt understand. The fact that Congress would get a pay raise basically at the expense of our TA is wrong in my eyes. Yes we still have the G.I. bill...but a lot of members transfer that to thier children or spouses because TA fits their military schedule better. Not just that but the G.I. bill is designed basically for people who are no longer in the military. It pays for your room and board and books. If you use it on active duty you are not receiving those benefits.

this is gonna touch all branches I'm sure. I just got a email from a fellow coast guardsmen that pretty much says after march 13 TA is finito for us. Utter bullshyt since this is literally the only reason I signed up and now I'm pretty much drilling for nothing (for me). I'm not gonna be fooled twice so after my contract is up I'm out. fukk the military brehs. if you are thinking of joining dont. First time I heard of this shyt happening was two weeks ago and now its a reality for all servicement. no real foreshadowing at all. horrible.

Then they joined for the wrong reason :50holmes:

I think we need to take care of our military personnel and this whole sequester thing is stupid. But on the flip side the military is too big, and to be honest a lot of people join for the wrong reasons. If we spent the money we did on the military on training and job placement think how much stronger the country would be.

why is that the wrong reason to join? American college is fukking ridiculously priced and the military is a feasible way to get it taken care of.
