Old out of touch baseball fans hate Manfred. As I said in my post, baseball fans are the most rigid fans around. They’ll complain about anything that doesn’t honor or carry on tradition. The changes Manfred made are geared toward attracting casual fans (including 18-34 demographic) back to baseball. His moves so far have worked, when it comes to length of games and play on the field. Only die hard complain about the changes, just like we have diehards here on this forum who cover their eyes to the problems that plague the MBA at the current moment, and call this iteration of stars and the style of play “the best ever”.
There is really only 1 thing I dislike about the current landscape of MLB
1. Pitch counts/innings limits. We know pitch counts and innings limits do not mitigate injury. There's no reason for this MOST of the time. Yet teams continue down this road.
In terms of the changes MLB has made:
1. I'm fine with the pitch clock
2. I don't love the Extra Innings rule where the runner starts on 2B. I wish they'd get rid of that. But it's not a deal breaker.
3. The larger stolen bases are fine. It has led to an increase in stolen base attempts, but I don't think it has negatively impacted the game.
In terms of the changes MLB wants to make:
1. Robot umpires/automated strike zone might be inevitable. Sometimes I want it. Sometimes I think there will be an art to the game that gets lost if it is implemented.
2. The Golden Bat idea. Objectively fukking stupid and terrible. I will never support this. Ever. Even if there's a fire!
