an accumulation of reasons

  • not getting talent from the churches
  • lack of groups, a true solo artist should be meant for elites. Anybody just shouldn't be a solo artist
  • trying to sale an artist based on looks rather than talent
  • the standards are down.
  • etc

That's a good point. Not everyone is meant to be solo artist. People are selfish with the spotlight now more than ever. Bone weren't singers but when they came together they sounded pretty good.

Are you nikkas buying Jill Scott, John Legend or Jennifer Hudson albums? If not STFU.

Mainstream R&B simply doesn't sell at all, so the artists resort to making club/radio songs. I don't blame 'em.

Look at Beyonce for instance. Someone as big as her couldn't buy a hit for years and then she decides to 'dumb' down her music & (over)sexualize her music and surprise, surprise.... it becomes her most critically acclaimed album and sets sales records.

Honestly, I blame rap music for the decline in mainstream R&B. That and declining album sales, nikkas gotta eat too and I can't blame them (record companies) for sacrificing quality for sales.

this is 2014 r and b. HORRIBLE LYRICS.

When a rich nikka want you
And your nikka can't do nothing for ya
These hoes ain’t loyal
These hoes ain’t loyal
Yeah, yeah, let me see

[Bridge: Chris Brown]
Just got rich
Took a broke nikka’s bytch
I can make a broke bytch rich
But I don’t fukk with broke bytches

[Verse 2: Chris Brown]
Got a white girl with some fake titties
I took her to the bay with me
Eyes closed smoking marijuana
Rolling up that Bob Marley, I’m a rasta
She wanna do drugs, smoke weed, get drunk
She wanna see a nikka trap
She wanna fukk all the rappers

[Hook]

[Verse 3: Chris Brown]
Black girl with a big booty
If she a bad bytch, let’s get to it (right away)
We up in this club
Bring me the bottles
I know girl, that you came in this bytch with your man
That’s a no-no girl
All this money in the air
I wanna see you dance

You have to go way back...New Jack Swing contributed to the death of R&B.
The 90's was the beginning of the downfall...so many one hit wonders.

a lot of genre's have one hit wonders though. we cant even get a decent one hit wonder in r and b today. some r and b i do like though. i like jennifer hudson, ledisi, it's a lot of problems in r and b though. lemme try to name em

1)people upstairs not really knowing r and b. you got people with a hip hop background doing r and b music. you got hip hop producers doing r and b. every hip hop producer cant do r and b. kaygee from naughty is good at it. but he said his true roots are r and b.

2)lack of music groups. just watch unsung man. money is the root of all evil. its a lot of artist who shouldnt be solo but would probably benefit from being in a group

3)platform. yes the internet is a bigger platform. but think about it. when you get on the net, most of us are on facebook, chatting, social media, etc. i dont go to worldstar daily like that. without the coli, i wouldn't had a clue that g unit put an album out. back in the 80s and 90s, bet was the ultimate platform. video soul, midnight love. shoot you had arsenio hall, mtv jams with bill bellamy. when you turned on bet or mtv, you got MUSIC. not reality tv. Look at BET. why do you think they got out the music game? they getting that tv and reality tv money. same thing with vh1.
