These fools. All they literally have to do is make it where you have to pay each time you watch it. They would still get their money. I might even pay a premium. The Black Widow movie was 30 bucks I think? I paid it. I would pay that for a onetime watch at home. I want the movie industry to succeed but im convinced they're ran by idiots :mindblown:

It could all be so simple..
But you'd rather make it haaaaard...:noah:
Loving you is like a baaattle...
And we both end up with scaaaars....:noah:

because the common audience fought back against you
I'm 100% with you
let people choose
out of all the movies that have released after covid I can say none of them are theater worthy :yeshrug:
the studios aren't going to care if I get covid so I don't care if they don't break records

And this is where I'm at. I'm still not going to movie theaters. Maybe covid is over. Maybe I'll be good. But maybe it ain't, and maybe I won't.

So I'd rather not take that chance.

But even beyond COVID, I feel these idiot movie studios missed a huge chance. If you give people the option of paying a premium fee to watch a movie at home, they'll take it. And why wouldn't you give them that option? That's more money in the studio's pockets. Like I said, I paid $30 to see Black Widow. And I only watched it one time. So it's not like they lost money on my repeat viewings.

HBO Max has been putting movies up for free, but I don't even agree with that approach because I believe that studios have to be able to see some benefit from doing it.

Simply charge the people a premium fee and be done with it. Those who want to go to the movies will go to the theater. I'll even go to the theater (after COVID) for movies that I deem theater-worthy.

But like you said, I don't deem that many movies to be theater-worthy. HOWEVER, if I had the option to watch them at home, I'd pay $30 just to be able to see something new on a slow Saturday or Sunday when I plan to stay at home. I'd pay to watch a movie I'm not excited about at home before I pay to watch it in theaters .

You are an outlier for many reasons
  1. You're still scared to leave the house. No judgement but you're in a super minority now
  2. $30 is beyond the pale for an in home movie without ownership. If you said 9.99 maybe but $30 is a non starter
  3. Going to the movies is better value than in home watching FOR SOME because of the fact that it's an experience for the whole evening and you react in theater to films differently at home. Comedies hit harder for example.
  4. You're cutting out revenue streams to actors and producers on the ticket sales, you're cutting out revenue to theaters and concessions, you're eliminating the fact that the entire theater is an advertisement for other movies, and the foot traffic in the area where it's at. There are many vested parties who want movie theaters to succeed beyond you and Netflix's desire to watch on your couch.
  5. You're overestimating most peoples' high speed internet for 4k or even most hd films. More people have access to a theater than high speed internet let alone an in home theater experience.
I could continue but the cons out weigh the pros if you're a vested party. There is a reason Cruise refuses to release top gun at home.

Another big con is piracy. If a movie is available to be streamed even for $, a pirate will pay, record it and make it free for thousands of people. That's not what the studios are looking for.

Yep same way
It’s not so much that they missed a huge chance it’s moreso the creatives up top fought against and are still fighting against it because it changes their bottom line
All the big stars get box office residuals and don’t want to be competing with the service
There’s got to be a new system put in place that gets them more money before they’re onboard and that system will come eventually
Hbo Max was the best service of the year because of day/date movies and to be honest if I didn’t have it bundle with directv I would’ve left the service in Jan. I barely use it now at least not enough to justify $15 a month
Yeah I paid for black widow too. It wasn’t that good but I never regretted the $30 price and I would pay $30 for all of the other marvel films coming out this year if I could.
Until then I’m waiting for every film to hit d+

The studios need to rework contracts so actors and producers get backend revenue or a bigger up front and go same date release. Especially streaming platforms integrated with studios like the obvious Disney, and hbo/warner, paramount etc.

That however has its own roadblocks unless they also own theaters.

All factual.

For the first point, it's entirely possible to catch a movie at the theater, and still be safe. I usually hit the first showing on a Saturday morning, and I'm good. Usually maybe four to ten other people in the theater other than my lady and I, and they're scattered well outside of safe distance. I'm not judging anyone either, but we all gotta learn to adjust life a bit.

Also, this plan massively overestimates how much people are willing to pay on a regular basis for one-off streaming titles. All it'll take is a one good month where multiple major releases come out for people to fully reject the idea, even if they were spending more on average by seeing those same movies in theaters. And the logic would be that while the studio benefits from you staying home and watching by cutting out one of the parties they need to split revenue with, they're not passing those savings on to the consumer.

At this point, the only way this gets pulled off is if Marvel just says fukk it, and sells a year long Marvel pass that has you play one flat fee, and get the three to four movies they release that year. And even then, if we're being honest, that's probably only hitting with a very specific portion of their audience.

Movie studios make deals with theaters to give them an exclusive timeframe to show the movie, in exchange the theater is able to promote the film before it hits screens, and attracts people to the theater along the journey, its a symbiotic relationship. That way both forms are guaranteed revenue. If studios had same day releases, it would cut down the live theaters revenue even more than it already has. I get your point though, Consumers only care about conveyance, but the 2 prong attack keeps everyone fed, The theaters, and the people that work there certainly want to keep there employment. The deals are usually 45 days exclusivity deals.

i love the movie theater too much so i hope this doesnt happen. Its your choice to not go to the movies, no one is forcing you to stay at home. I mean, covid, i get it…but are you never going to a theater again in your life? Cause covid aint going away. Plus the movies come out at home rather quickly now, i dont even need to torrent cause usually around the time a good copy is out its also streaming.

I honestly like the hbo max approach with the Batman. Let a movie gets its shine in the theater for two months then release on stream.
