Why is it so Difficult for Big Men to Replicate Kareem's Hook-Shot?

I like how they he never actually takes the shot :russ:

Javale McGee is like a retarded genius, or an idiot with a lot of potential. I think he has the potential to have a Kareem like skillset. George Karl will be the best thing to happen to dude. I think dude is one of the rawest talents in the L but the Wizards was no place for him.

no he wont. Karl will help Javale refocus his energy and master what he already can do butt Javale wont learn more than he already has in his arsenal. There is nothing in Javale's game that resembles Kareem, what a bizarre comparison.

Not that bizarre:

“I think he plays a little bit like Kareem (Abdul-Jabbar), but he’s a defensive Kareem more than an offensive Kareem. He’s not going to be a power player, but he’s going to be an athletic-length-long player.”

-George Karl

I'm not saying he is any near Kareem's level nor do I think he will ultimately finish up at that level, but he has the raw potential to play with that sort of skillset. Defensively he is not as far off as you think. Like Kareem, Javale has the longest wingspan in the NBA, dude has the arms of 7 ft 6 player, and in my opinion has more upside than any big man in the league now, the problem is the dude has the basketball IQ of a fish. But that's fixable under strict coaching and good tutelage and Hakeem is a real good place to start.

It'd be extremely difficult to replicate that shot. I don't know why Kareem always talks about how easy it would be; easy for him, sure, but not for everyone. One, Kareem had been developing the skyhook since he was a preteen, so of course it would come easy to him as a professional. Two, Kareem is one of the longest athletes ever, which helped make that shot unblockable (well, except for Wilt). Also, Kareem had great coaching throughout his amatuer years, which isn't something you can say about all of the big men now.

And it's just a difficult shot. Go out to your local court today and try that shot, and there's probably a 60% chance that (if you've never practiced it before) it goes sailing over the top of the backboard.

I guess if you started a kid off EARLY with the skyhook he could develop it like Kareem, but I don't think you can just develop it easily from the professional level on. I mean, it's difficult enough for guys to develop jump shots at that stage.

I didnt say McGee was defensively far from anything. McGee has potential to be a defensive player of the year type of player.

But offensively, its not anywhere there. And you dont learn new skills as you age, you can only refine and hone what you have. McGee shot a hook shot off the top of the backboard a few times over in his career, and he is an idiot.

Kareem was playing that way since he was a kid, and refined and honed his game over the years. Dudes dont just wake up and learn how to play a certain way. It doesnt work like that in the NBA. You need to have a base to start from at the very least, and McGee doesnt even have that.

And changing your BBall IQ is not something that can be fixed. Again, this is stuff you learn from an early age in playing the sport. McGee lacks fundamental stuff.

And I can give a rats ass what Lithgow says.

no one is expecting a big man to just attempt it in a game without practicing it, like you would

the point is, they should be putting in hours upon hours in gym working on it from high school if not sooner. but it's not even taught, or ATTEMPTED to be taught, so of course it's gonna be difficult for people who never practice it.

for the life of me, i don't understand why it's not even attempted to be taught.

Its def not an easy shot by any means...the lil baby hook that Shaq and most other big guys did is easy but the sky hook Kareem did is hard as fukk to pull off right. That being said it is suprising that not one big man has ever tried to replicate it. Then again there ain't exactly an abundance of good big men running around nowadays. The whole position's been in a major decline
