why is it in shows n movies like games of thrones all actors are english?

Because these shows are historical and the english accent is very old which makes the roles very believable.
I was watching a show a while ago about ancient rome and the actors were American with American accents and I found it really distracting and just couldn't get into it.
The American accent is very young which doesn't really work well with historical shows
this is the right answer

American accents just don't fit settings that are based of European history/mythology.

I find it more annoying when I see British accents in a movie like Gladiator or Ten Commandments. Game of Thrones is pretty much set in a mythological Britain. But why would ancient Egyptians or Romans speak in Shakespearean English? I think this is just an American hangup that we think of good acting as having a British accent. There also seems to be a lack of American films that look at the rest of Europe as well.

there is no such thing as a british accent, so i don't understand this
