The British take acting more seriously in terms of the craft and there are a wealth of great actors with legit British accents so why hire an American who is unknown to do an accent? Only time they take a risk with an American is if their name is so big that they know it will pay off in the box office but sometimes the accent is considered terrible by critics like when Tom Cruise did the Irish accent for far and away

Not weak but I think it sounds too "young"?

I don't know why but even as an American I'd find it weird if shows like Rome had peeps with Boston/NY/NJ accents or even Southern accents. It just doesn't seem like it fits the setting.

Meanwhile British accents sound old and classic.

Also like someone said about the American Accent being young there was no American accent before the 1700s and it's actually set in a fake European setting anyway in medieval times so it wouldn't even be authentic in that realm to do an American accent

Because these shows are historical and the english accent is very old which makes the roles very believable.
I was watching a show a while ago about ancient rome and the actors were American with American accents and I found it really distracting and just couldn't get into it.
The American accent is very young which doesn't really work well with historical shows

Those productions have English producers. Cant explain game of thrones though.
