I don't really didn't know people in today's time didn't generally understand that disco is really the birth of house, and the forefather of most modern dance music...
Now that being said House in the late 80s divested itself of its disco roots because the disco backlash feeling was still strong... Point blank, it was early house acts and DJs who tried to distance it from disco.
Now I got to correct one big revisionist going on in this thread... Disco was hated by everyone by 1982. Black, white, poor, rich, rock fans, country fans, soul fans, etc.... Can go into it deeper... But it wasn't just some racist hate thing.
This is on point. People started to hate the disco lifestyle, the underground gay community within it and the commercial push it got. The same reason why House never popped off mainstream in the 80's too.
Sheeeeet....we always loved house out here. Just had to battle with hip hop, reggae and others.
There's always an argument whether House started in NY or Chicago.
The Philly sound was the main catalyst though....
Good example of underground Disco
People have to understand the House genre has splintered off in so many directions.
The commercial Euro/EDM stuff which is all the rage, has completely obscure the more underground Soulful Deep House scene which is still rooted in Disco, R&B, Gospel, Latin and West African music.
Once House left America in the late 80's the ravey/Trance/Euro Dance sound became synonymous with House. And the more traditional styles got pushed to the background.
In very small circles in NYC, Jersey, DC, Baltimore, Philly, Bay Area, Toronto, London. The more traditional Soulful House sound still exist and has been pushing on, through dedicated dj"s, dancers and folks who just love the music.
And these folks are very aware and still respelct the roots of House. Trust me i experience it every time i go out.
Classic internet shyt.
Who doesn't give disco props for being the mother of house music?
It's not as if people are saying that it was rock music.
Daft Punk dropped the biggest electronic album ever probably that was praising it's origins all over the album.
