Why doesn't America believe in rehabilitating criminals, only punishing them?

Most of them are pretty worthless individuals anyway. Why spend hard money trying to heal them. Either lock them up or make them useful to the state somehow through hard work.

biggest myth ever.

one of the best workers at my job is a felon and hes going back to prison next month. so whats your point?

Pop Quiz: How Do You Stop Sea Captains From Killing Their Passengers?

To get into the back-to-school spirit, we've been asking economists about the stories they tell to kick off their classes.

Here's one from Alex Tabarrok of George Mason University (and Marginal Revolution). It gets right to the heart of economics.

Back in the 1700s, the British government paid sea captains to take felons to Australia. At first, it didn't work so well, Tabarrok says:

About a third of the males on one particularly horrific voyage died. The rest arrived beaten, starved, and sick. I mean, they were hobbling off, those who were lucky enough to survive.

This was a scandal back in England, so the government tried to fix it with all different kinds of rules. Force the captains to bring a doctor along. Require them to bring lemons to prevent scurvy. Have inspections. Raise captains’ salaries. None of it worked.

The clergy begged the captains, for humanity’s sake, to take better care of the prisoners. No dice.

Finally, an economist (who else?) had a new idea.

Instead of paying for each prisoner that walked on the ship in Great Britain, the government should only pay for each prisoner that walked off the ship in Australia. And in fact, this was the suggestion which in 1793 was adopted and implemented. And immediately, the survival rate shot up to 99%.

Here is the first, fundamental lesson of economics: Incentives matter.

Incentives are at the heart of all kinds of things. Everything in the tax code is an incentive — or a disincentive. When we change the regulatory rules for banks, credit card companies and mortgage lenders, we’re trying to change the incentives, to change their behavior.

But it can be tricky to get those incentives right.

Before the captains were paid to keep the convicts alive, they had different incentives — "like keep food from the prisoners, and then sell the food in Australia," Tabarrok says.

Reward the captains for keeping the passengers alive, and — voila! — they arrive alive.

A good social order, Tabarrok tells his class, aligns self-interest with social interest.

How the above relates to the OP:

The government is paying private prisons per prisoner housed rather than per prisoner rehabilitated.

This causes rational (but amoral) private prisons to structure unrehabilitated prisoners as "assets" to be maximized, rather than as "liabilities" to be reduced. This in turn incentivizes prisons to allow prisoners access to drugs so that they can fail drug tests, and their "assets" be held longer. It also incentivizes prisons to lobby politicians for mandatory minimum sentencing laws, so that they acquire new assets at a faster rate.

To solve this problem, renegotiate government contracts to pay prisons per prisoner rehabilitated instead of per unrehabilitated prisoner housed.

Most People have worked hard for what they have and for someone to rob them or steal or physically assault them for such.....they need to be punished. If they get away with a slap on the wrist, they'll do it again.

"b-b-b-b-ut I'm from the hood, I grew up poor....I gotta rob/steal to eat" [Charlie murphy voice] Wrong! wrong! [Charlie murphy voice]

If anybody else made it out of your situation, so can you. And at worst, you can get an honest min wage job and be able to feed yourself.

Once your a felon your life is over......might as well move out the country and start a new life

There is nothing to rehabilitation. Your life is over

this is why it has to be stressed that black males cant bounce back from fukking up like our women. dude gets a felony, his life is pretty much over.

lets keep it real, its only a few things one person can do to deserve life in jail, or even 15 years in jail :yeshrug:

I don't think someone that sold drugs or robbed a bank should be in jail for over 15 years, what's the point??? For crimes where no victim was hurt, I would say the maximum should only be 3-5 years.

so if someone( a grown ass man) robbed you at gun point and took every possession you'd worked 20-30 years for, you're cool with them getting a slap on the wrist? :rudy:

Mods need to ban that word. Yall be throwing that shyt around much much too freely. You crazy as fukk if you think robbing a bank should only get you a few years in prison. What next armed robbery gets you 6 months? attempted murder 4 years (hell you didn't successfully murder the person, so you might as well go free) Yall bugging.

And to the answer the OP, you know damn why rehabilitation isn't what the prison system practices. Nobody cares about Black prisoners.
