Why doesn't America believe in rehabilitating criminals, only punishing them?

lets keep it real, its only a few things one person can do to deserve life in jail, or even 15 years in jail :yeshrug:

I don't think someone that sold drugs or robbed a bank should be in jail for over 15 years, what's the point??? For crimes where no victim was hurt, I would say the maximum should only be 3-5 years.

Prison= Money

It costs over $65,000 to jail one person for a year..
Most prisons have quotas to reach so if they can gain a certain amount of prisoners each year, they won't lose funding.
Privitization of prisons is a big business in which corporations and contractors can make big money.

There's a reason why we're building more prisons in the US...while other countries are tearing their prisons down due to a lack of prisoners. And that's....MONEY!

Most of them are pretty worthless individuals anyway. Why spend hard money trying to heal them. Either lock them up or make them useful to the state somehow through hard work.

There are victims, they just don't have a face or voice but you see them everyday (sadly). I had a family member who had the world before her and could've been anything she set out to be get hooked on drugs. Hurts when you beat yourself up over thinking maybe there was something you could've done or said that would have helped them get back on the straight and narrow.

Because most prisoners are black so white America has no empathy for them, therefore no urge to challenge the corrupt private prisons who are profiting off repeat offenders.

There was news story a couple of years back that reported that there were more black men in prison now then there were slaves in America. Prison is the new plantation.

The more things change...the more things stay the same...

No money in rehab. Why try when the numbers show that they will end up back in your cells anyway?

Preverse incentives. If they changed the rules to paying prisons per prisoner rehabilitated instead of per prisoner housed things would be alot different.
