Big Willie Style and Lost & Found are NOT trash albums in any sense of the word....

Will wrote Summertime himself as confirmed by Jazzy Jeff

Will, while not the best rapper by ANY stretch, has in his way, carried the torch for Hip Hop since he was 17 years old and had his first hit record. Dj Jazzy Jeff & The Fresh Prince won the FIRST Grammy for Best Rap Performance, and boycotted the ceremony as a showing of protest for the way the industry was shytting on the culture at the time. Dude had the Illmatic poster put in his room on the Fresh Prince set. He created a timeless Hip Hop summer classic. Will deserves the respect he's earned...

I fukked with "He's the DJ, I'm the Rapper" real heavy as a kid. That's about it though.:manny:

The pass he gets is largely peeps choosing to ignore his music as opposed to shytting on it. He entertained us in other ways so it's like fukk it.:yeshrug:

Yep, that's pretty much how I regard him, as the OG Skee Lo making goofy anthems that appeal to kids. There are about 9,000 M.C.s who fit that bill. I liked him rapping over that I Dream of Genie loop as much as any kid did. I also liked The Count kicking alphabet-related bars on Sesame Street. :manny:

hold up, are you serious threadstarter?

Yes, thread-respondent, I am indeed serious. Will Smith is a shytty rapper who uses ghostwriters and makes tissue soft, watered down, whitewashed crappy pop rap that no one with any sense of musical taste could possibly enjoy. Yes, I am serious about this most basic and obvious claim.

do u know hip hop.

No. I grew up in New York City across Harlem and Brooklyn during the formative years of hiphop, have a famous rapper in my family, have grown up with people deeply involved in creating hip hop culture, actually came up on all the shyt people go back and retrospectively talk out their ass about, but I have somehow missed the boat on this hip hop shyt. Please educate me. Especially regarding Will Smith, a truly legendary M.C. who is at least top... 5,000 or something of all time. Just because the homie punched an alien in the nose on screen and saved the world doesn't make the dude a talented M.C.

but his earlier stuff, pleasure stay in your lane.

did you just call me "pleasure," plehboi? Didn't know my nickname was out there like that.

because he is will smith the god

Oh.

thread starter is either white or gay i never heard a straight black male say anything negative about will smith

Some quality irony there.

His work between 87-89 was respectable. He obviously was no Rakim or KRS or even Special Ed, but it was cool. He's been trash ever since. Summertime doesn't count because he didn't write it. This used to knock though.

Think he gets most of his love mainly as a personality moreso than as a rapper...he's something of an negro 80's baby icon...rose from semi-serious rapper to the star of what ended up being a definitive sitcom to movie star...all the way to this point where's one of a handful of legitimate black hollywood/pop culture A-Listers...had he just had to lean on his actual rap career, the latter part of it wouldn't even exist at all (no way he would've survived the death of colorful rayon shirt era rap in the early 90's if Fresh Prince of Bel Air hadn't taken off)...and we'd largely look at him in the same nostalgic way we look at the Kid N Plays and Kwames of the world...but not as some kind of legendary figure or anything

I like the title track to Rock The House with Ready Roc C beatboxing and Brand New Funk to this day. The rest of his stuff is kid shyt and I've always hated him on screen.
