street cred wasn't always the main focus of a musicians career :what:

Fascinating point. Please drop a few more jewels for the uninformed. And while you're at it, reread the thread and find a reference to street cred outside of an uncle Phil joke. Do you cats read posts or just see thread titles and predetermine your canned responses.

Will smith is terrible at rapping, uses ghostwriters, and is a crossover family friendly pop rap whore. Facts.

I fukked with "He's the DJ, I'm the Rapper" real heavy as a kid. That's about it though.:manny:

The pass he gets is largely peeps choosing to ignore his music as opposed to shytting on it. He entertained us in other ways so it's like fukk it.:yeshrug:

Oh, so now sharing a label with better rappers is earning stripes? That nikka was a glorified skee lo. Kid n' Play>>>>>>>corny ass wil smith. And they're basically the rap version of cabbage patch kids.

erm i didnt say that but cool, you asked a question in first post, gave you my spin on it.

no, he has no "cred" as supa dope emcee, but in the 80's they made their own lane and repped hip hop for what it was to them.

dont know what else to say, apologies in advance if this response to your question does not suffice.

gotta remember dude is super old school, mid 80's...the joints he did were some of the illest for their time and they rocked parties...not to mention jeff is considered one of the best dj's in the world

listen to "rock the house" and a bunch of other joints from 85-86. you can hear for yourself how far ahead he was than a lot of people and why hes so revered

I usually don't say shyt like this but only whiteboys disrespect will, yeah he had some corny tracks, but he had some classic tracks too, dude ain't the goat or nothing but he did his thing with rap and acting, never had no crazy scandal, always presentable and seem like cool ass dude.

It's rare to watch someone you relate to " a young black teenager " blow up in the 90's like will did. We actually witnessed dudes rise to stardom. Will always be respected.

Will Smith had more rap cred than most rappers, a lot of you guys knew him from his Fresh Prince days and after, but dude was already a 4 or 5 year veteran by the time the show dropped and his albums were a little corny but Jazzy Jeffs beats were extremely thoro and Will was a technically able rapper. I think he gets a pass because he never denied his shyt was corny, he just rode a lane that he felt was comfortable for him and he was the only driver for a lot of years.

Summertime, made people respect him more as a rapper though, but his music prior was all pretty solid.
