The dumb down lyrics was Vol 1 - Dynasty. Blueprint was Jay adding back introspection and retrospection to his music and the soul beats helped to create that vibe. He was very vapid for a good 4 years prior.

Word play and dumb down lyrics are not the same. Jay wanting to rhyme like common was about subject matter....not word play skills.

It's funny because people admit to Lil Wayne being a bunch of word play on many songs, but lacking substances. 90s Jay-Z while making cogent songs was pretty damn vapid....

Like Jay said black album era:

Uhh, uhh, yes sir!
Just the sound of his voice is a hit, heh heh
Y'all nikkas got me really confused out there
I make "Big Pimpin'" or "Give it 2 Me" one of those
They hail me as the greatest writer of the 21st century
I make some thought provokin' shyt
Y'all question whether he fallin' off
I'ma really confuse y'all on this one… follow!

This is the internet.
People are miserable and hate on everything.
This board in particular despises Jay-Z
This thread will devolve into people hating on the Blueprint
Same arguments for 20 years

No one hates Blueprint they just say it isn’t Jays most lyrical album but it’s still a classic overall.

Did you actually listen to Vol. 1? It has some of his most introspective songs.

That's when he started down the volume 2 path...he laid the groundwork with sunshine and what girls like. His singles on Vol 1 was different than the other tracks in the album is the point.

Tbh, I almost never see the Blueprint get any hate. Almost everyone considers it to either be a classic or a quality album save for some contrarians.

The Volume albums have gotten underrated for a long time though.

LOL @ this thread. It shows that a lot of people just ran with te narrative that PR put into them.

Conceptually, Vol. 1 is deeper and more constructed than The Blueprint.

The Blueprint is mostly just bragging and women. The widespread idea that the blueprint is some mature album does not coincide with reality :yeshrug:

The things is non stans grew up and realize that the Blueprint was weak lyrically and became classic thanks to the wonderful beats (except that Timbo nonsense and the Trackmaster nonsense). Stans can't see that and are confused.

And I don't even think Blueprint is Jay's best album.

Most people rightly call out it's one of his weakest project's lyrically... Save his renegade verses and lyrical exercise (which Nas did better on stay chiseled).
