all facts

the newer generation isn't as familiar with ray because his music predates predates alot of what they hear/look for in connection to hiphop and modern r&b.It's the same reason why James Brown is more revered than Same Cooke along with Ray Charles. The generation that would take soul and funk into new heights all revered Ray Charles.

Exactly. Billy Preston and Sly Stone (I don't think Sly really gets his fair dues anymore either) said Ray was their god.

I had to dig up the article again. I forgot about the part for the band name.

"Whenever they got together and played, boy, you have never heard such music," remembers Cynthia Robinson, the trumpeter for Sly & the Family Stone. Billy taught Sly changes on the organ, and Sly wrote and produced several tracks for him. Since both men were raised in the church, the music they worked out together had a certain religious meaning for them. Respect for Ray certified the bond. They even considered forming their own band; they were set to call it the Sons of Ray. But the Sons of Ray never happened. "I had set up a session for Ray to produce us," says Billy, "and Sly was late. Ray Charles was our God, it was embarrassing." And for a long time, Billy couldn't bring himself to talk to Sly at all.

Also, another thing with Stevie wonder music is he made it easier on the audience ear, made it more accessible and that's smart of him. To love Ray Charles, you really have to love music.

When you hear "isn't she lovely" thats a sound anyone can just bop to the beat and sing along, but its harder to do that with Ray Charles blues music and blues is a genre one either loves or hates no middle ground, because its not a sound that's easily accessible.

It's the same with Michael Jackson thriller. It's not like Michael and Quincy created a whole new sound, it just it took sounds from different genres and made it simple and easier for other listeners ears than add Michael magnificent voice and you have a hit album.

My two favorite singers are Ray Charles and Prince. These two made music that they loved not what the audience would love, but it turns out that a lot of people loved it also, but it stopped them from getting real mainstream love like others. Prince dropped purple rain and then did a 360 with around the world in a day. Ray Charles made a country album and people didn't know how that would be perceived at first. Prince and Ray didn't want to be pigeonholed.

stevie is easier for modern ears to get into because his music has more in common with recent music but if you asked someone that is 50 years and older, it would be the reverse

Ray Charles ever make ‘Songs In The Key Of Life’? :stopitslime:

Aight then :martin:

Did he even make a Woman in Red? A Jungle Fever? A Secret Life of Plants? I'm sure we can all name a few RC songs, but I couldn't name an *album* other than the one w/all the duets on it. (Genius Loves Company, I think).

it's bluesy, rhythm and blues but not strictly blues

stevie is more modern sounding because he's from a later of period of soul music as it was going into funk music. ray is first generation soul where the older blues and jazz influences are more obvious

When was ray considered the ONLY musical genius? And it's simple, Stevie had more mainstream hits and is the more popular artist. Why make this more complicated than it needs to be? Stevie also came through the Motown machine which helped his popularity.

If I'm being honest, I can name two ray Charles songs off top and his Pepsi commercial....while I could fill a screen with just Stevie singles, not even getting to album cuts.

Just to show you a little of how he was seen as only genius of music of his time

He made a crossover hit and he made it randomly because he ran out of music to play.

Yeah I see what you're saying. Now, I think about it Ray Charles blues music wasn't strictly blues.

As far as Stevie wonder goes you're right too, has more of a mainstream sound than Ray.

What's your favorite Ray albums ? It gotta be country albums for especially the first one

A message to the people is a very underrated album

Ray Charles taught Quincy Jones how to write music and he went on to be behind thriller, without that their might not be a thriller album

Thread was made to show genius of Ray cause its so sad he's been forgotten in a sense not debate between the two because both are seen as geniuses just one has been forgotten amongst the younger crowds.
