Why does no one release a competitor to the ipod/ipod touch devices?

Somewhere in the official jobs biography that came out they talk about Jobs intentionally cannibalizing iPods in favor of iPhones/iPads. At this point its an auxiliary function at best and the market just isn't big enough. Sure there are one off cases (some of the people in this thread for instance), but it isn't big enough to go full scale into it.

I did notice that when i got my iPhone 4S,
It sounded a tad bit bitter than my iPod Touch 4th gen.
There really isn't a need for an iPod if you have a smartphone.

To all of you saying to use ur phone....I have TONS of music, I don't want to and cant really load all my music onto my phone. Nor will I sit there and rotate music on and off to account for space?

Does any phone have capacity to load 50 GB's of music?

I still have a 120GB Zune player that I've had for a few years. Works just fine. For me. Most importantly for me, the battery life is better than it could ever be on a phone for a music player.

When and if it dies, I'll buy an iPod.

I got 48gb on my phone

I could get a bigger card but Im good

I stand corrected.

But I still dont know if I'd ever fully make the complete transition over to solely a phone for a music player until there's an assisting cpu software program that allows me to edit the album art, song titles, etc. ie Zune/Itunes

And like I said, the battery life.

Yeah I feel you. I was eating good in that i Ecosystem for the album art but idgaf anymore.

Nah, I have PowerAmp on my phone and the logic the album art uses is messed up sometimes. It pulls in random pictures on my phone for certain albums at times.

And when you have a lot of unreleased stuff or something, you cant easily add the art

Does PowerAmp have a cpu software program?

I"m in the same boat as this guy...I got 48GB on my phone after I got that cheap 32GB one on Amazon Prime last week. My best friend got a 64GB one from Amazon for 50 bones. It's no big deal.

Google Music puts my entire 90GB library at my fingertips :lawd:

But I thought this thread was solely about iPod touches.... that market is dwindling since phones are can do what they can do and more.

Phones haven't replaced other MP3 players like the iPod classic and iPod shuffle which I use. The classic stays in my car and is controlled by my head unit and the shuffle is great for working out...a phone wouldn't replace either one of those. Plus there's the battery issue as you pointed out.

Apple dominates the MP3 market for two main reasons: iTunes and the accessory market. I can plug any MP3 player into my car stereo (with its aux ports) but Alpine only took the time to develop a software interface for the iPod. And there's tons of secondary products out there like this.

The only reason for a consumer to choose a non-apple MP3 player is if they're an audiophile, or they can't afford it, or they have an irrational hate for Apple

pretty sure samsung makes a galaxy media player which is basically a gs2 or gs3 without the phone functionality.

but like someone up top said, basically every phone plays mp3's. they sell millions of ipod touches, im honestly not sure who is copping. i think its people with blackberry devices
they do but if you have a modern smart phone its a pointless purchase. most of the people who buy iPods already have a phone that can play MP3s and just carry two devices.

i used to have those large capacity iPod classics. i probably only actually listened to 15GBs of music and the rest of it just sat there and most of it never got listened to.

smart playlist are the best thing for people with large libraries. they sort through all your music and only include stuff you actually listen to.

iTunes Match is a great streaming program if you do not have enough storage to house your music. It also uses no space on your iPhone.
