Why does no one release a competitor to the ipod/ipod touch devices?

Yea, I can only see kids getting iPod touches these days.

If you have a phone, there are much better devices for MP3 playing (shuffles, classics, etc)

I only know that the Zune flopped, and I haven't heard much of anything else in that department. Is it really only about the phones?

Cause the US Treasury has less cash on hand than Apple Inc.

You'd need an ecosystem to compete with apple on that front, and at best you'd be fighting for scraps. Both Sony and Samsung manufacture android media players, but it's already a dwindling market that apple sucks up all the profit from. Not to mention at this point your only market would be kids since everybody and their mamma already owns a smartphone that play mp3s/videos among other things, so at best it's a just a hobby to either company.

I just use my phone.

I have a friend who works in a casino and is not allowed to use a phone in the Main Cage for music. (Security and gaming reasons) She was doing some research and saw a rumor of a Galaxy player which was basically a S3 with ICS and no phone capabilities but it doesn`t have a release date. That might have been a good buy but who knows if it is ever coming out.

Zune was the truth though,
I always wanted one.
Zune still is. I have the 60 gig HD joint and it's flawless not to mention the software.

I'm in the same kind of situation for work... I need a high capacity (32GB+) media player with no WiFi, Bluetooth, or camera capabilities..shyt is really hard to come by...

To all of you saying to use ur phone....I have TONS of music, I don't want to and cant really load all my music onto my phone. Nor will I sit there and rotate music on and off to account for space?

Does any phone have capacity to load 50 GB's of music?

I still have a 120GB Zune player that I've had for a few years. Works just fine. For me. Most importantly for me, the battery life is better than it could ever be on a phone for a music player.

When and if it dies, I'll buy an iPod.

I don't know what kind of phone you have but as long as it can handle a 64 gb sd card you should be fine.

Somewhere in the official jobs biography that came out they talk about Jobs intentionally cannibalizing iPods in favor of iPhones/iPads. At this point its an auxiliary function at best and the market just isn't big enough. Sure there are one off cases (some of the people in this thread for instance), but it isn't big enough to go full scale into it.

I stand corrected.

But I still dont know if I'd ever fully make the complete transition over to solely a phone for a music player until there's an assisting cpu software program that allows me to edit the album art, song titles, etc. ie Zune/Itunes

And like I said, the battery life.
