Why does no one release a competitor to the ipod/ipod touch devices?

I only know that the Zune flopped, and I haven't heard much of anything else in that department. Is it really only about the phones?

you already mentioned zune. that was the major competition and it flopped. there were others but the only major competition was the zune. to be honest, i didn't mind zune that much...

Dell tried,
Creative tried,
Sony tried,
Phillips tried,
Microsoft tried,

Apple is far to powerful brand,
And with iTunes backing them up,
It was a done deal for most.

Zune was the truth though,
I always wanted one.

Because more and more people are using their phones as a media device myself included. But Sony is putting out a really nice device soon and I had their first touch player and it was really good and sound quality was better than an ipod.

Because even when you release a superior media device you still have to gain traction in the consumer market... This is where the Zune failed...

pretty sure samsung makes a galaxy media player which is basically a gs2 or gs3 without the phone functionality.

but like someone up top said, basically every phone plays mp3's. they sell millions of ipod touches, im honestly not sure who is copping. i think its people with blackberry devices

I just use my phone
Why carry around two devices? Market isn't that big anyways anymore

He'll I mostly stream music, is there even a stand alone iPod or MP3 player that can give you 3G or 4g to stream?
