Reading a contract means nothing if you dont understand any of the music business verbiage.
And most labels seek younger impoverished artists who are just looking to make money and could care less about the business side. Or arent informed of the right type of lawyer to get.

A matter of fact, artists nowadays would love a Bad Boy contract, where they didn't have to give up portions of their touring, merchandise, etc like they do now with these 360 deals.
Now Birdman, has been proven not to uphold the contracts that his artists sign. I've never heard this about Puff.
Also, record label contracts and buying an artists publishing are two separate transactions.
Buying an artists publishing for the low is more of a grey area. I don't necessarily have a problem with it. And no one is forcing the artist to sell their publishing.

My bad if he did, I just named a bunch of people. But then he also released a flop. So even if his stay was positive in profit, the return on equity might’ve been super low, specially considering that it was all he did in the nearly 15 years that he was there. Time, staff, producers, engineers, studios and other expenses that “could’ve” been used for someone else.
The point was that, people look at the very few successful people and say “ohh labels are so evil” but don’t ever mention the vast majority of non-successful or minor successful and say “ohh labels are so nice they let them make a bunch of money without doing shyt”.
It’s just basic portfolio theory if you like finance and in this case artists are like penny stocks

If y'all think Puff done escaped taking L's all this time, you're crazy. He done took a gang of them he just suffer in silence while y'all look at his life and say he winning.
It's the reason why he's been as positive and spiritual as he's been the last 5 or so years. He learned that no matter what you say or do, the outcome is a reflection of your intentions.
Not a single person that has ever been signed or affiliated with Bad Boy was guaranteed to be a success. Everyone of them was a gamble, a handful paid off, the others not so much. Where they landed had more to do with their own ability to push through the down times.
Big's outcome might be the only one he could be attributed some responsibility for. And that is only because of his direct affiliation and people needing someone to blame other than Pac himself.
