Most places it ain’t respected. Say you from Detroit without living in the city limits and not put suburbs of or metro in front, even if you out of town you building your own coffin. We got two cities (Hamtramck and Highland Park) inside of the city of Detroit and they can’t even claim us without any backlash and they are literally surrounded entirely by the city limits

Gucci Mane left Bessemer, AL at 9 years old then went to East Atlanta.
Usher from Chat Town in Tennessee. Idk why people think he’s from ATL.
Lil Bow Wow is from Columbus and always claims it but people still think he’s ATL
Andre 3000 from East Point, GA and Big Boi from Savannah
UGK always claimed Port Arthur, Texas.

LA is deferent because Compton, Long Beach, and Inglewood are not in LA city limits but the county is the same name as the city. So technically all of the surrounding LA cities is in fact Los Angeles.

Moved to Chattanooga from McDonough in 05 (left in 2010 and moved back to the area in Fayette County). I tripped out driving around seeing Usher Raymond Parkway in Chattanooga the first time

If you moved somewhere as a child and grew up there into adulthood, you have a right to say that’s where you from . Itd be crazy for a rapper to be bragging about being from Atlanta if he moved from there at 9, like if Wacka Flocka was bragging about being a NY nikka. NYC comparisons aren't really applicable because NYC is one of the few cities with a clearly defined boundary. Youre either from the five boroughs or youre not.

You gotta look at ATL like the actual city is Manhattan and the 285+south Fulton areas are the outer boroughs. The surrounding areas of Atlanta are integral to ATL culture, a symbiotic relationship. Only thing Long Island and North Jersey got on NYC is the Giants stadium

Closest youre gonna get is Yonkers and it's proximity to the Bronx. You could theoretically say the same thing about Elmont in Long Island but it kind of an inverse situation. The further you go down Westchester the more things look like NYC. OTOH, the farther East you get in Queens the less it looks like NYC and the more it looks like Long Island

Interesting because Welterweight boxing champion Errol Spence is not actually from Dallas (he's from DeSoto), but from what I've seen Dallas basically claims him. But maybe it's different for him because he's not a rapper

They do it to help their careers. A rapper repping Mississippi or Alabama wouldn’t be as appealing as a rapper repping Atlanta.
