I have no clue.Chinese girl told me about a short trip to Japan. She said she took a bus there, said hello to the driver in japanese, sat down and started talking mandarin on her phone. When she was getting off the driver spoke to her in chinese and she said they were both shocked to meet each other because they both thought the other was japanese.
Vietnamese people who told me about the double eyelid thing, but mentioned it because I was asking how they could you tell a chinese person apart from them. Told me vietnamese look more like koreans and nothing like chinese because "chinese have the double eyelid and koreans and vietnamese have only single."
Korean guys I asked said that they can grow facial hair and most chinese guys can't. Everyone I've ever asked said that they can tell, but not automatically at first--unless they are Filipino. Not my people though, so I just take their word for it.

Any person immersed in their culture and see their ethnic people in their lives will recognize each other at a non verbal level. For example, if I even have an small hesitation of somebody being Somali... Chances are they are Somali. or in the off chance at LEAST very near my people.
I'm sure there's a term for this type of recognition based on intuition like @MostInfamous said

With people that know the difference, I maintain a little distance from mainland China. Too much negative shyt goin on. but in this forum I'd be lucky if brehs could point out China on a map, so I gotta say China cuz if I try to explain that Hong Kong is a special administrative region that has our own laws and culture and government and language and shyt (our roots are from China tho, like most east Asian countries, no matter how hard they deny this - look at Japanese and Korean language and written texts, they've vultured our shyt. Hell up until recently Korean law was written in Chinese.), while still belonging to China, they won't get it. It's like levels. First and foremost I'm Hong Kongese. Then Chinese. Then Asian. Then human. Then carbon based lifeform, etc etc
but most brehs only see one level - Chinese or Asian.
In reality hk and Taiwan people would NEVER claim affiliation. I just cape for my homeland
