Why do cats like Jay Z still make commercial pop singles?

Lesbian honest brehs,

The real reason nikkas want Hov to put out a Nas-like album is so that he can do Nas-like numbers and nikkas can clown and say he's irrevant now.

Basically they want him to play in Nas' bracket.

But my nikka like :russ:

i don't care if Nas sells 2 copies bro

I think he's the greatest and I didn't even buy any of his albums since Streets disciple

Last Jay Z album I bought was BP2

both these nikkas rich so fuk em, if they was dead broke I'd cop them tho :manny:

I'm copping that new Sigel tho, he needs the cash

dope thread bro, salute, i asked this question to someone madd years ago. why do the lyricists who aren't filthy rich seem to not care about selling their anus and mouth, from an integrity standpoint, to sell records but the cats who are already set up for life financially are still just trying to make you shake ya ass and all that? change the world fam, if not the world then at least change the game. legends have no business making purposeless music, imo, leave that to these young talentless idiots.. i don't think jay-z makes straight pop songs, nah, but i think he makes a looooot of pointless, purposeless drivel that isn't forward-pushing in the least...

pretty much.

Jay got the power to change hiphop, but instead he chooses to follow the usual formula

I feel like the industry is full of so many followers/dikkriders that if Jay went a different route then everyone else would systematically follow. At least that's what I think, maybe I'm a bit out of touch and his influence isn't that strong anymore, i dunno.

Guys like Biggie, Wu and Nas being on top in the 90s forced alot of unknown/new nikkas to step their game up to compete thus making the whole industry better. When you got a guy ontop making generic ass top 10 records like everybody else then there's no reason for these young cats to step up and compete.

I shyt on Lupe alot but I gotta give him props cause he's one of the view semi mainstream nikkas that isn't a follower and does his own thing.

No, fans killed hip hop. You'd rather cry and complain about artists that make music that you don't like instead of supporting the people making music that you do like. You guys stopped buying records then you turn around and complain that rappers stopped catering to you. Theres a reason that rappers cater to the pop crowd, they're the ones actually showing support. You keep talking about quality of the art as all that, well quality is subjective. Your tastes or preferences in music don't hold anymore weight than anyone else's. The answer to your thread's question is common sense. Jay Z makes pop records to sell them.

Jay makes more money from clothing, touring and other side deals/endorsements/projects he has than rap bro. That's been the case for decades.

nikka doesn't need to create music to sell anymore. It shouldn't even be a business for him at this point, it should be a hobby/pastime based on how much little income he actually gets from it.

But he did always say he's just a hustler that happened to rap so :ehh:

maybe my criticism is unwarranted, and homie never was a pure artist to begin with? No different than Birdman, Diddy and any of these other cats strictly out to make a dollar

Shows is amongst his highest incomes. nikka charged a college a million bucks :whew:.

And he's not doing it to sell more records, they just dropped WTT without doing a single interview, only sold on the internet for the first 1 or 2 weeks, a single without a hook and not even a video until the album was released.

His motivation behind BP3 was that he was gonna tour the biggest festivals, play in the biggest arenas and on. So he needed what Kanye calls Stadium Status Music.

And besides that Jay doesn't have to sell, but he has to stay on top of the game, he has to touch new territories with every album, he wants to win more grammys, end up higher on greatest musicians lists and on. He's not focusing on being one of the illest spitters out of BK, NY or the East Coast he captured those belts between 96-01. He's focused on being remembered world wide as one of the greatest musicians of his era. That's just my guess... But I wonder why is so hard for you to get? Maybe you're a low achiever.

I do not question anything Jay-z does in music or business. No one bats 1.000 and none of us have made as many RIGHT moves as he has.

And seriously, it is still working and he still makes entertaining music. He can switch it up when it stops.

I'm still waiting on these "pop records" that Jay-Z is doing. It's like you guys never step foot in clubs. Since when is being well-rounded as an artist a crime?

Did you hate "Give It To Me" too?

In Jay's entire career you can point to like 3 or 4 pop records. Show Me What You Got, Run This Town, Forever Young and what else? Maybe, that atrocious shyt with Beyonce..that Bonnie and Clyde.

Even on Run This Town, the dude spent the entire song rapping about the Roc Nation takeover and how much it cost him. Meanwhile, Kanye comes in and just straight raps for once. The only thing pop about the track was Rihanna.

If that's a pop record then "Hero" is a pop record.

Cats are really acting like "On to the Next One" is a pop record? A pop record is what Nelly was doing. A pop record is "How to Love." That's why Jay-Z has never been the best selling out of his contemporaries, he never went all the way out there with that shyt.

As far as why he does what he does? I don't know. I'm not him. Speculation would be pointless.

Show me what you got pop though?
It was "classic hiphop" with that sample, he was rapping about parties though.
He's spitting, no singers on the hook, it's a great party song. Of course he's not going in his hardest lyrically mad wrapped in metaphors and all that, it's cause that's not what people want to hear at a party or social function. Maybe these squares do, but most of us don't..

For a long time, Jay has never been comfortable to stay in one spot. So I don't know why it shocks anyone that he now makes music with intentions of being big songs to perform at stadiums, or songs that will be used in commercials and whatnot. He's already been the streets' favorite, he's already been the king of Hot97, he's already been that guy everyone called for the guest verse on the single... if he's shown nothing else in his career, it's that he always tried to go further and become a bigger star with the music he made. I'm sure that if he wanted to make a whole album with Premier, he could do it tomorrow... but it ain't like he didn't already tell people what his intentions were. And when it comes down to it, if there had to be a rapper to cross those lines and make those big major mainstream records, representing hip-hop on the big stage... I'd rather it be someone like Jay. I'd rather it be someone that we KNOW came up from the underground, made classics, went from mixtapes and battling and the Bobbito show all the way to Oprah... instead of it being some cornball that doesn't have the same kinda history in the game and didn't put in the work. Cause when it boils down, somebody's gonna be presented as that guy- if it had to be someone, it SHOULD be someone with a legit pedigree as an all time great MC. Now that doesn't mean I like everything the dude makes, but I respect where he is in his career.
