I agreed with you that 2K was the better game. Madden was always the most popular game by far. It was huge. A cultural phenomenon at the time. Even after DC died madden was still huge.

Now answer my question.

A new console gets announced today. Tomorrow the biggest news story about said console in that it WON’T have Fortinght and/or COD.

Do you see a path of success for thh the new console?
It COULD have problems but if they have other popular games that cross platforms it definitely could be successful. I see where you're going but in the grand scheme of things, EA not being on the console at launch was minuscule compared the mistakes with the Saturn/32x/Nomad & Sega of Japan not listening to SOA

Exactly this. 2K shytted on Madden gameplay wise but being in middle school at the time you’d get made fun of for playing 2K instead of Madden. Crazy how marketing works

I was in HS playing 2K. It was so much of a struggle to rent it because it was so popular. By the time the 2k3’s came around (NBA and NFL) people were getting roasted for fukking with madden. There were still a few arguments for live but even then we were more likely to play 2k.

2k was the game everyone was serious about. With live we would just get high, hold turbo, and dunk the entire time until somebody came over with 2k. 2k had everybody leaning forward in their seats with they eyebrows all furrowed, letting the blunt burn out between their fingers lol. 12 minute quarters and all that. You could laugh off your L’s in live cause it didn’t feel real and you could say you weren’t trying. 2k had you defending your honor by the 3rd quarter on some “you might beat me in 2k but I can beat your ass in real life tho!!!…” “YOU CANT ALWAYS PICK THE LAKERS/KINGS fukk ass n*gga!!!…” type shyt. shyt was midnight club levels of hate. I didn’t speak to my brother for a week over an L in NBA 2k.

I remember that Kobe game on gc was fun too. I miss when all the sports game companies had competition smh.

This topic hurts because it always reminds me of what could've been.

I loved the Dreamcast. Easily in my top 5 of all-time in terms of consoles. I still remember when I first got it.

The graphics were beautiful. It was the perfect platform for all of the fighting games out at that time. Had great Sports games, RPGs, Horror, and some of my favorite Light Gun (House of the Dead 2) games. The VMU was cool as fukk as well.

Back in those days, I wasn't sure why everyone stopped caring about it so quickly. Seemed like everyone just started talking about PS2 and that was that.
Co-sign. Still arguably my favourite console ever. Birthed alot of originals that carried on after its death: 2K series, Metropolis Street Racer which then was reborn on the OG Xbox as Project Gotham Racing, Jet Set Radio/Jet Grind Radio.

I got one shortly after launch once seeing NFL 2K playing in the window of my local EB games. I also feel like a played a factor in it's death because this was no doubt the easiest console ever hacked. Didn't require any chip mods, just the famous reindeer boot disc. Most games fit on 74 min cds, only a select few required 80 min cds. It was just too easy back then to grab new ISOs from FTPs and Newsgroups. I was doing this damn near a week into ownership. Then the self-boot file came out where you could burn it with the game and no longer needed to run the first boot disc anymore. It was officially curtains at that point.

The PS2 was already known and it's launch was only 5 months away, so many were just waiting for that - coming off the huge success of the PS1. Dreamcast was coming off Saturn 🤢

I remember talking trash on 2K1 through dial up using the keyboard you could get for it. What a time. I'm sorry Sega :mjcry:

Apparently, SEGA wants to create one but they claim that "high costs caused by the pandemic are preventing it from producing a Dreamcast mini console".

They're probably not lying.

Look how hard it is to get a PS5? And Sony has plenty of $$$. Just a reality of the times :manny: hopefully the chip shortage ends one day

that's interesting to see. i was in high school and 2k was considered the future
You guys are confusing fandom with actual sales.

No matter how much people felt 2K was better, Madden was in a whole nother league in popularity. It Transcended gaming or even sports fans and was a staple in pop culture.

Dreamcast not having Madden doomed it from the start

Better to reign in Hell than serve in Heaven
2K was great to fans, and a better game to most people who played both.

But Madden had hold of the masses. It was literally THE most important game on the market at the time.

Same as fortnight now. There’s plenty of shooters that are better games, but none of them will ever match the popularity/importance of Fortnight.

It was know that Dreamcast would NEVER get EA games from its inception.

shyt was doomed off that fact from the jump.
This is correct because it wasn't just Madden. It was all of EA AND other developers.. They had no trust in Sega and wouldn't fukk with them

You need to sell systems... 2k wasn't going to sell any system LIKE THAT.. Not to counter "No EA games over there"

I forgot how easy it was to bootleg games for the dreamcast. Didn't even need to swap discs or anything. I think after the launch releases, no one I knew that owned a dreamcast bought a single game.

My neighbor got banned from eBay with the quickness trying to sell burned games. Dude put burned games on the title and pics of CDR discs with the game name written on it with a permanent marker.
