Android TV box sets are good if they are up to date. they are much better if you have a custom rom installed.

you just need to install your third party apps, and you are good to go..

And you answered it right here. Its easier to build a system that works well when you already have an idea of what hardware you'll be dealing with. Google has to design software to work on a variety of platforms all from multiple manufacturers. I honestly don't ever expect Google to have an ecosystem as good as Apple's.

For now, it just requires too much development on Google's end. Apple has ios, watchos, tvos, and importantly macos. They support all of them, for years, providing service too. And they all work pretty much seamlessly within each other.

The only real way for Google to get the ecosystem and updates right is to do what Apple does and control everything. If they partner it out like Android they're gonna have the same issues. Android partners are more interested in selling you their next device than they are keeping you up to date on their older ones. It doesn't work to their advantage to update old phones. Apple on the other hand doesn't mind if you keep the same phone for years as long as you remain in their ecosystem because they still make money off you buying apps and other devices.

Samsung doesn't make jack shyt when you buy random apps on Google Play.

Android clearly dominates the global market share for smart phones but They tried to put it on TVs, tablets, and smart watches and in comparison it just never took off on any of them. Is it that the Google ecosystem just isn't that strong?

Apple users seem to want total device integration between all their devices. Maybe Android users just don't care about that?
android still makes android watches

Android's openess is a gift and a curse. I rag on Apple because they restrict everything and take too long to add features but their ecosystem is top notch. You'll never have to worry about something not working with the other and their W1 chip has made things even easier. When something goes wrong, I'm lucky enough to live near an Apple store for support.

With Android, I'm pretty much on my own because you'll get passed around unless you have a warranty.
