Why are black people in south/Latin America completely missing from their society's public sphere?

Whatever you think of the African American situation, you can't deny a huge progress has been made when it comes social advancement. There are black mayors, senators, attorney generals, and even the most powerful man in the country is black. African American influence/presence in the media is also very strong.

So how come our cousins south of the border haven't been able to replicate this? Even Brazil, which is supposed to have the biggest black population outside Africa has practically no black involvement in the public sphere. Any reason for this? Are they not as aggressive as African Americans when it comes to fighting for their rights or is there something else?

Yeah, Columbia for example, has a 14 percent black population, which means Columbia has more black people percentage wise than the United States

The simple answer is that Latin America is a racist oppressive society against black people, in the us black people have exploited the concepts of liberty and freedom to advance our cause, in Latin America there is no real ingrained concept of freedom even if you are white

But also the racial mixture is different and the one drop rule is not as clear so it's easy for black people or mixed people to say they aren't black (or Indian)

But the real question is why are so many black Americans convinced that people from Latin America will unite with them against the "cac" when Latin America society is just as racist as the us, what makes people think that white people from England are different than white people from Spain?

its a false hope, black people will be more marginalized in latin american culture than in white american culture

what happened with the white washing of rock and roll is nothing compared to the white washing of salsa and merengue for example, which are just as black as rock, gospel and the blues

Political power does not mean economic power, that is why so many black politicians end up in jail.

Swagnificent wrote and excellent post on how the one-drop rule in the US benefited blacks. If racism isn't overt and spelled out in the law, it is nearly impossible to fight.

We had whites on our side. The NAACP was created by whites and mixed blacks. Most HBCUs were created and/or funded by whites: missionaries, industrialists, abolitionists, and racist state governments. The US Constitution is fluid and changes with the times.

Quick Info:
Vicente Guerrero, 2nd president of Mexico, was black/mixed.
Pio Pico, last Mexican governor of California, was black/mixed.
Fulgencio Batista, president and dictator of Cuba, was black/mixed. He was banned from joining Havana Country Club because he was black. (The dictator, ya'll.)
Hugo Chavez, president of Venezuela, was black/mixed.

It is important to know that in Latin American the indigenous people typically have less than blacks and many don't speak Spanish well or at all.

Good thread. I remember watching the Colombian soccer team during the World Cup and being surprised that almost half of them (maybe more) were black.

It shouldn't be too surprising being that Colombia has a decent sized black population, but when it comes to the mainstream, Colombia isn't presented in such a way. The same applies to many other Latin American countries with a sizable black population.

Latin Americans are worse than American cacs. Over there even the divide between poor and rich entitles the latter to treat the former like scum, shyt that wouldn't go down in the USA. As in they can rape/severely assault if not downright murder fellow lower class cacs and the law won't be applied because of their power. While prominent figures in the USA can receive lighter sentences and preferential treatment, it's not like a Bush or a Kennedy could rape even a black woman and expect no repercussions if there is evidence it happened, latin america they raping fellow cacs and nothing happens. So you can imagine how low down the food chain negroes are.

Because they tolerate black people there and generally dont embrace them. Argentina just killed all the black people that didnt flee to Brazil after slavery.

And they all work for the interests of whites that dont give a shyt about black people. Getting a good ass job, isnt advancement.
