Why does the rest of the world suck at basketball and football?

(a) they don't play what we call football
(b) they're about to pass us up in basketball soon

Just look at the best young players in the NBA. They are almost all foreigners.

Also the last 5 of the last 6 #1 picks in the NBA Draft have been foreigners. DeAndre Ayton (Bahamas), Ben Simmons (Australia), Karl Anthony-Towns (Dominican Republic), Andrew Wiggins (Canada), Anthony Bennett (Canada). Next year's projected #1 pick is also a foreigner: RJ Barrett (Canada).

The era of US dominance in basketball will be ending pretty soon. Our under 19 team was beat by RJ Barrett and Canada last year in the World Championships. I think by the 2020 Olympics the US team will start to look beatable. And by 2024, the Olympics in basketball will start to look like the World Cup in soccer where it'll be a tournament that is up for grabs rather than a lock to the US team.

The US will still have the most depth but the days of us having the best player in the league will be over. By 2020, guys like Embiid and Giannis will be the best in the NBA. And by 2024, who knows, maybe RJ Barrett will lead the Canadian team over us. Unlike soccer which is 11 on 11, basketball is just 5 on 5, so the best players have the most influence.

Cricket is HUGE in the West Indies ( all Caribbean islands compete together internationally as “West Indies”) and a lot of the best athletes play it and get contracts to play in leaugues in big time cricket countries like India and Australia.

No I didn't forget 2004 but you have to go back 14 years them lose in the Olympic games and 12 years to see them lose in international competition when they lost to Greece. While 2008 and 2012 were close, that doesn't change the fact that it won't pass the US in basketball. No. Because the majority of the top players are still American thus most of the talent is still American. It will still be deeper than any other nation. You're naming pretty much one player per team. While the US can name multiple names on the team. You can mention Karl Anthony Townes. But what else is on DR? You can name Embiid. But what else is on Cameroon?

I'm not arguing that other nations won't be more competitive. I'm arguing that you flat out said that nations will pass the US in the sport. It is as ridiculous as saying the US will pass Germany in soccer.

I put this in the WC topic....along with that video this explains the current context of the game in America.

Nah, America is trash from a technical standpoint. Overemphasis on "hustle" and "athleticism" which is all good until you realize these clowns couldnt pass or finish for shyt.

There's really 3 major issues with American Soccer.

1. Half the Country is Priced Out: Only America could find a way to make the world's cheapest sport somehow one of the most expensive to participate in. Most kids cant afford travel leagues, pay in for neighborhood leagues etc. Your talent pool shrinks exponentially when poor kids can't play the sport. Race has a LARGE part to play here as well.

2. College Sports destroy the youth talent we DO have: Everyone in the major leagues of soccer start playing at academies and clubs from the time their like 10 years old. And some, even get first team experience by the time they are 17 or 18. At that age, we are pushing kids into the college system which just adds miles to their bodies, they don't get paid and most don't finish school (if sports are their goal). The loan system helps young talent get first team experience in lower tiers and they can start maturing as players.

3. Marketing: The sport simply wasn't made to look cool until the late 90's early 2000's with the Nike "Jogo Bonito" and "Take it to the next level" campaigns. Basketball's rise in the past 25-30 years can be directly attributed to mass media and marketing. Literally without Nike/Gatorade and others the NBA is a third tier league behind baseball and football.
