Compared to the other major sports it's still a niche. What's the TV or streaming viewership numbers looking like currently in the U.S. compared to the other sports?
In the college sports world the American Athletic Conference has a tv deal about to end soon and fans of member schools have been speculating about the future tv deal. Since we’re not a power 5 conference we have to look outside of American football to find comparable tv figures. One popular theory is that the conference will get an amount more than the mls and less than the premier league since the AAC tv ratings fall in the middle.
So that’s kind of a ballpark figure of the mls and BPL ratings. The AAC has games mostly on secondary ESPN networks (espnu, espnnews) while the mls gets better tv slots I believe. BPL mainly airs on nbcsports which usually gets lower ratings for everything.
So mls gets good tv time slots, lack of competition and still gets outdrawn by a g5 college football conference. The premier league has worse time slots, far worse network exposure, and more competition (football in the fall) and still pulls a healthier number than the AAC. If the premier league had games on ESPN and abc they’d have even higher ratings I’d imagine.
Soccer isn’t close to the nfl right now in terms of ratings but the sport gets damn good ratings once you consider everything that factors into ratings.
