Compared to the other major sports it's still a niche. What's the TV or streaming viewership numbers looking like currently in the U.S. compared to the other sports?

In the college sports world the American Athletic Conference has a tv deal about to end soon and fans of member schools have been speculating about the future tv deal. Since we’re not a power 5 conference we have to look outside of American football to find comparable tv figures. One popular theory is that the conference will get an amount more than the mls and less than the premier league since the AAC tv ratings fall in the middle.

So that’s kind of a ballpark figure of the mls and BPL ratings. The AAC has games mostly on secondary ESPN networks (espnu, espnnews) while the mls gets better tv slots I believe. BPL mainly airs on nbcsports which usually gets lower ratings for everything.

So mls gets good tv time slots, lack of competition and still gets outdrawn by a g5 college football conference. The premier league has worse time slots, far worse network exposure, and more competition (football in the fall) and still pulls a healthier number than the AAC. If the premier league had games on ESPN and abc they’d have even higher ratings I’d imagine.

Soccer isn’t close to the nfl right now in terms of ratings but the sport gets damn good ratings once you consider everything that factors into ratings.

It's actually hard to go pro in soccer in the States as compared to everywhhere else. You either have to sign a homegown contract with a MLS club or waste time going to college to enter the draft. You can't just enter the draft at 18. This leads to our best players outright byassing the legaue for Europe which in turn lowers the cultural impact of having talented players like Pulisic or Mckennie.

The development academy actually does an adequate job of developing guy up until th 16-18 year old range where kis need to get to a pro environmen quick.

Until you change your youth system for football your athletes best suited to football won’t ever get a chance anyway and if they somehow get through they’ll be so far behind skillwise it won’t matter.

America could be a footballing powerhouse if it really wanted to but I don’t ever see it happening.:yeshrug:

US has 3 major sports already maybe 4 including hockey.

Do you really want the full brunt of US dollars/media and culture getting into soccer ?

The women’s team does great though even with the same system.

Why are they able to do well in woman’s soccer?

They have the same system as the boys

Do women have a professional football league or an extremely popular basketball league (the WNBA isn’t popular) in the US? No. For American men the top tier athletic talent goes to the NFL and NBA, for women it goes to soccer and to a lesser extent the WNBA.

basketball is popular in more than pockets globally speaking. Probably 2nd to soccer in it's widespread reach globally and 1st out of the major USA sports

Biggest Global Sports
the only other countries that basketball is taken seriously are China and the Philippines (maybe Canada?)....and those fans are much more interested in the hype of the NBA than the sport itself......like millions will show up to bron/curry camp or watch the NBA finals...but CBA only draws 5000 people per game, plus the Chinese are not contantly hooping in their spare time, haha......shyt is like game of thrones or something for them

Problem is US sports are so dependant on athleticism especially at the youth/junior level (HS/College) that unless you can run this fast and jump that high, the fundamentals of technique gets made secondary. Once people stop the size and athleticism fetish and start thinking technique first, then you may start moving in the right direction.

as much as I wish black folks would abandon football, I think its always interesting when folks try to put down or dismiss a different culture or history because they don't join you and your country as quadrennial losers who aint got a chance in the world cup get excited like every pop warner dad whose son ever gained 10 yards.

This tweet is 100 percent true on how black Americans feel about soccer :russ:

He's right though when he says AA need to be more open with soccer.Think about all the short brehs who are 5'6''-5'11'' who are skilled as hell at B-ball with tight handles and shooting strokes but, won't make the league, unless they really bust their ass like IT and Nate Robinson. Even skilled guards in this draft like Sexton and Trae are questioned if they are going to make it in the league due to their height and size. With soccer they won't have to worry about their height limiting them and their skills will be more focused on, dudes are missing out on good opportunities when it comes to soccer.

USA will never compete with Europe or South America in soccer, those regions have a 100 year traditions, especially europe where youth gets to play against pro's and where all the biggest competition and best soccer players play. You can prepare the best athletes, teach them all these techniques and it wont mean shyt unless those players to go europe play against pro's. Basically MLS will never catch up with the best european soccer leagues.

Soccer in the US is older than Basketball. Y'all did play the first international match held outside of the UK. :yeshrug:.

Stop thinking best athletes first. If they bothered to teach technique first and the allow the athleticism to naturally progress as the human body grows, you would get better footballers.

Breh that dude is literally retarded. No one gives a fukk about American football outside of North America. Basketball and baseball are popular in pockets outside of North America. People don't care about American sports like that.
Word. He’s one of those fat cacs that can’t see the beauty of football :blessed:

You can go to a place in Africa where they are living in poverty and ask them if they know who MJ or LeBron is and they’ll hit you with the :yeshrug: but ask them about Messi or CR7 and they’ll be :blessed:

American football is not popular outside of America and basketball is no where near the popularity of football.

Football is the most popular sport in the world.

CR7 and Messi are known across the world more than MJ or LeBron.

The 3 Michael's are universal. Yall really don't understand how big they were.

If we played soccer today, tomorrow we'd win the fifa Cup.
