this era of history is a weak spot for me. i know a bit, but there might be/are holes in my knowledge.
from what i know,
augustus was only a leader due to julius and the work that julius put in (i'm of course simplifying here).
the family name caesar helped augustus out a lot as well,as far as gaining followers was concerned, the money that julius left behind, augustus used to buy mercenaries,etc....
that is basically all i remember about augustus.

julius is by far the greater historical figure:
-highly accomplished military mind
- inspired loyalty among his soldiers (some of the wars they fought took close to a decade and still his men stood by him)
-skilled writer; his work has survived to this day - coined the famous phrase 'veni, vidi, veci, for example
-hooked up with cleopatra

all i remember about julius without googling, i'm going with julius caesar.

please correct me if i'm wrong. i'm always willing to learn more.

Augustus easily. Defeated Marc Anthony, Julius Caesar's right hand man in a civil war despite being a military novice. Added most of the Balkans and a fair portion of Germany before the Tuetonburg Forest fukk up. Guy doubled the size of the empire. Rebuilt the city of Rome from one of brick into a gleaming city of marble. Established the formal Empire all while leaving much of the superficial infrastructure intact; he preferred to call himself simply the First Citizen and not Rex or King. Established the worlds most efficient mail system and he did much to promote actual culture as a sponsor of several playwrights and poets. Didn't fukk young boys and laid the groundwork for the Pax Romana, two centuries of relative peace.

He wasn't half the soldier Caesar was but he didn't need to be. He was a far better administrator and politician; he neutered the Senate while Caesar was killed because of it. He also established the Empires formal European limits along the Rhine and Danube rivers, as well as setting Armenia as Romes eastern most province. Plus, he didn't get assassinated and was one of the few Roman emperors who died of natural causes rather than attempted stabbings, smotherings, and poisons.

Caesar was a great military leader but a rubbish politician. Augustus was the opposite, who ruled for decades ensuring peace and prosperity.

So I guess it depends on who you want leading in a war or in peacetime.

How was Caesar a trash politician when he was running circles around the greatest politicians of his day as just a young not even rich patrician.

If you look at both their careers Caesar is the much great leader of men, much more cunning and charismatic. Dude didnt pay his soldiers for decades and was against the wall dozens of times but they stayed loyal off his swag alone. I like Augustus and snuffing out the republic like he did is amazing, but Caesar ppretty much built his entire shyt up by himself.

Idk man everytime I go through the history of Rome Caesar comes off as the GOAT and Augustus is almost a right place right time type of situation.

I read a conspiracy theory that julius caesar did not die during the ides of march and was actually running things behind the scenes when augustus was in power. If this turned out to be true that would mean julius should get alot of credit for what augustus accomplished
