"You" didn't always necessarily mean any particular person...

It's probably not about anyone, although of course some of these lines could be interpreted to be.

i.e. the high-top tryna be like Kane, then Snoop released and it became a G thang. That line itself could be a BUNCH of nikkas, it describes the way rap changed around the time he's talkin' about.

He does it seems. I have no idea if he was but I always theorized Common was going @ Nas on Kanye's Get Em' High. Kinda payback for when Nas was dissing Neosoul generally and called the Roots porch monkeys. Just something I thought at the time.

I kind of thought the same plus thought he sent a sub Nas’s way on Chi-City. But an interviewer asked him about it point blank and he said that he loved Nas and would never diss him

Who was he goin @ with these lines?

"You wasn't saying you was a thug before Pac came
Ten years ago you had a high top trying to be like Kane
Then Snoop released and it became a G thang
Claim sets, your city ain't got gangs
nikkas ain't hate you, they ain't paying you no attention
In a circle of fakkits, your name is mentioned"

Could just be to any "John Doe" tho.

I hate sublims like this where its impossible to figure out who they talking about and they
never get asked about it.

Alot of underground rappers, like Common used to be, be like that. Love Common otherwise tho.

All rappers that most people like. That never served nobody frfr. All Make records like this and never definitively ripped the top draw in their locale or world wide.

All that shyt cap cause I know all these nikkaz got ripped or hid in the house. At least to common credit. Com actually asked for battles like a ho orabke samurai. While loan dodgers and others hid in rhe house tho.

That goes for all the rappera. All y'all nikkaz generally like tho.

So Dilla just used whatever was laying around to make this beat? lol the fukk!?! Dude was a monster!

Yeah, Questlove pulled a record off the rack he knew would be hard to pull a sample off of and dared Dilla to make a beat. Dooinit was the result.

Listen to Hot 97- Mister Cee Throw Back At Noon Mix ft. ?uestLove (2012) (J Dilla Tribute) by Brandan E. aka DJ E-Feezy on #SoundCloud

Go to minute 48. Questlove does the break down live. Better yet just listen to the whole hour
