Funny thread. I'm a :flabbynsick: nikka from the Bay and I remember when dreads were only rocked by a small number of conscious dudes, black hippies/stoners, or lyrical miracle new york influenced hip hop dudes. Mostly the latter. I always saw it as something New York popularized, at least originally.

I'm :flabbynsick: from the Bay too. When I think old school Bay centric hairstyles, I think fingerwave perms :heh:(i.e. Dru Down, Rappin 4Tay), rat tails, shags. Dreads weren't the wave in the Bay until the early 2000's with the Hyphy movement.

Far as I can remember, DMV nikkas been rocking dreads since the late ‘90s and early ‘00s. I think I’ve seen a few pictures of OG’s rocking dreads back in the mid ‘90s as well.

RVA nikkas been rocking dreads for a minute too.
Dreads were everywhere when I came here in 2002

Nawl
fukk nikka.

Calling firearms sticks.

Slide as in going somewhere or making a move.

Call locks dreads or referring to a male as a dread head.

If someone calls a pill, a bean, you’re welcome.

There's a difference between who started it

And who made it popular

And the answer to who made it POPULAR today

Is unquestionably

Chicago
Nah. Drill didnt get big till 10-11 ish and dreads were already trending long before that. Lil Wayne had everyone and their brothers growing dreads round carter III era, then Waka blew em up even more. Dreads were def already popular in the south prior to that though cuz when me and some fam went down to ATL bout 05, dread heads were everywhere.

Forida, not even close.

As far as who made it mainstream for the rest of the US? Probably Wayne
