The correct answer is Waka Flocka and various Drill rappers. :pachaha:

nikkas aren’t rocking dreads because of Florida. :pachaha: They rock wicks. And no disrespect but no rapper from the Bay with dreads was popular enough to influence people like that. :yeshrug:

I give credit to any region who was trending with the dreads before Y2K. And the only region that was known for that was NYC because so many of those nikkas is Jamaicans raised in America. All of them Boot Camp nikkas rocked dreads in the 90's because where they live at is the closest your going to get to Jamaica in America.

And DMV nikkas be having selective memory too much. They swear they were wearing fitted Versace and Gucci like they were dressing like it's 2018 in 2000 when they were really wearing baggy Warner Bros gear, Hobo gear, DDTP world and all of them other bootleg local brands cut off shorts and shirts with seashells at the ends of their braids. :mjlol: Maybe big drug dealers in DC were dressing super fly, but the average DMV nikka had straight back cornrows, their zip up hoodie unzipped with the strings tied in a knot, a big white tee, big ass light blue jeans with ruberbands at the bottom showing off Flightposites.:stopitslime: When braids were popping in the early 2000's like 2000, 2001, no one had a head full of full grown dreads in Maryland or DC, period. Dreads only became popular when braids and plats got played out in like 02-03'. Even Wayne had braids before he had dreads. Most nikkas nationwide followed him in that journey because Wayne first started letting his dreads grow in like 2001.

And the only example nikkas online come up with of Bay nikkas having dreads back in the 90's is Opio from Souls of Mischief. But nikkas fail to realize the culture of the Bay encourages people to be themselves, so of course you gone find one nikka that had dreads back then. But I'm from Frisco and never hung out in the Town like that and I heard nikkas in East Oakland been on dreads since the 90's and it spread throughout the whole Bay during the Hyphy movement. :ld:

Florida influenced ATL the rest of the South musically, and in the streets. ATL had the juice and ran with it, and thus influenced the rest of the south and the US even further. And the wicks style while the most popular style in florida, it isn't the only style in Florida. Many derivatives and styles grew from the wicks and other Caribbean/AA influences. Wicks, locs, and other free-form styles were the root, and other more polished styles grew from there. Some say it's AA others say it's rasta.

Bob Marley had a crib in Miami. Hell, his son's stayed in Miami long after he passed on. Rohan Marley played HS football at Palmetto High and even played for The U and he was rocking dreads way back when(in the early 90's) The Marley clan have become mainstays in the community. Other University of Miami football players on TV and in various rap videos(like Edgerin James in Trick Daddy's music video back in like 2001) had a large influence on the viewing public since way back.

Oh Let's Do It came out in 2009. Dreads were already everywhere by then...I don't know anyone who grew dreads because of Waka. Dreads were already climbing in popularity by 2005.

:yeshrug:

Chief Keef got big in 2012. Dreads been popular by then.

:yeshrug:

What we can positively say is, different rappers and different regions influenced different styles of locs, dreads.
