The Knicks basically did what I was asking for a couple of recaps ago...
So what should they do about the trade deadline? I’d still like to see a big swing forward brought in for players too tall for Grimes or Quickley. But I don’t think New York should be pressed to deal first-round picks for an OG Anunoby-type game-changer. I’m not sure that would tip them into contention, and I’d like the war chest full for the following trade demand from a star like Kyrie…hopefully, a player without the baggage.
Hart's not exactly "big," but he plays bigger than he is and gives Thibodeau a wing defender for guys that were too big for Grimes and IQ. As bad as RJ has been on defense, they really needed this kind of player. He can fill in for a lot of back-up roles. He can be a secondary playmaker when IQ struggles, a defensive stopper when Grimes has trouble, and a slasher at the rim when RJ is off. The dude will replace McBride and probably take minutes from others based on hot hands and defensive match-ups.
About the price, I don't think it's an overpay. Hart's a genuinely talented player in his prime. I suspect, between his CAA and Brunson connections, that the Knicks are confident he'll be extending for a price they're okay with. A lottery-protected pick for a rotation player for the next few years would be a fair price. If he walks, then this was probably an overpay.
We still have the Mavs pick, and there's an outside chance that the Wizards pick also conveys. Not that I trust them to use the picks in the draft. All signs point to loading up for whichever star player becomes available next.
The big thing for me, is that even if they traded for an Anunoby or a LaVine; that probably wasn't making them a contender. So, they stuck to their usual habit. They added another useful player, while a bunch of their young guys continue to develop and (lord willing) improve.
It's not a championship formula. But they'll have one more talented guy to fill whatever void is left when Leon Rose dumps a bunch of pieces into one big name. I think that's all these guys are waiting to do.
