Yeah, my bad. It's two seconds. The worst between the Suns and Pacers in '28 and the worst between the Wiz and Pacers in '29.

The rumors about a first-round pick for Obi piled up in the leadup to the trade deadline this year. At the time, it seemed like there was disagreement over which pick would convey. This is around the time talks started, and they continued right to the deadline.

It wouldn't have to be a big difference to fit the simple statement: The Knicks hang on to assets past their peak value. It's insignificant alone, but there's a pattern. They hang on to middling assets, the assets get more and more exposed and devalued, and then they can barely give the pieces away. Noel, Burks, Obi, and Rose all had value at one point. But the Knicks held on to them until they didn't anymore.

To put it in other words, this FO seems to get attached to its assets unless they demand out. That applies to the Mitchell trade talks, to the middling (or worse) pieces that they wound up having to dump, and resigning players like RJ (your least favorite FO move) and Mitch Robinson. They expect more than they can get for assets and refuse to cut their losses unless they absolutely must.
So yes 2 seconds that is fair market value

The article says the Knicks wanted one of Indy’s first round picks for Toppin and that first round pick was going to be trade bait for a star given the trade never occurred when they were shopping him while he was injured it’s safe to say Indiana wasn’t willing to give that up

Chris Duarte traded for two second round picks

Kenyon Martin Jr. traded for two second round picks

Pacers and Knicks already had talks about trades for a potential first round pick and it didn’t happen clearly because they weren’t interested in giving that up

Everything gets fukking blown out of proportion in NY

RJ and IQ easily.
For me it’s Mitch and Grimes only because finding a defensive Big and D&3 is easier, than finding two guys I think could be 20 pt scorers and aren’t defensive liabilities. I think Grime and Mitch could be top tier for their roles but it’s just easier to replicate even at a lesser level.

Like I said, that was just the initial report. Here Ian Begley points out that several teams are interested and everyone believed a late-first was on the table. The thought at the time was that the Knicks wouldn't settle for just one late-first.

Knicks Trade Rumors: Obi Toppin Eyed by Multiple Teams; NY Asking 'Significant Price'

The New York Knicks are reportedly fielding trade interest for former first-round draft pick Obi Toppin, but the team isn't willing to let him go easily before Thursday's deadline.

According to SNY's Ian Begley, "Several teams talked to New York about Obi Toppin this week. The Knicks' asking price is said to be significant, as you'd expect."

Begley named the Indiana Pacers as one of the teams to have "registered interest" in Toppin. The 24-year-old becomes eligible for a contract extension this summer.

The eighth overall pick in the 2020 draft, Toppin has not been able to see much playing time in his young career. In his three seasons, he has a career average of 14.5 minutes per game. He hasn't started any of his 41 appearances this year, posting averages of 6.6 points and 3.3 rebounds.

The emergence of power forward Julius Randle as an All-Star is the main reason for Toppin's lack of opportunity to see the floor. However, Begley pointed out that the youngster has not been one to complain.

"Toppin has handled his diminished role with class publicly," Begley stated. "As far as I can tell, he's done everything the franchise has asked of him."

The Knicks already acquired swingman Josh Hart from the Portland Trail Blazers, reuniting him with his Villanova teammate Jalen Brunson. At 30-26, New York is just a half-game out of the No. 6 spot in the Eastern Conference.

Moving a player like Toppin would surely help the Knicks continue to improve their roster, but time is winding down for teams to entice New York to let him go.
I feel like everyone should be able to remember this. It was almost foregone that the Knicks could get a late first for him heading into the deadline. They kept him, he demanded a trade, and the late-first became 2 second-round picks.

Here's a Pacers content creator's take at the time. They thought Indy was willing to give up a late pick too, but thought anything more would be too much.

The day of the trade deadline, New York Knicks insider Ian Begley reported that the Knicks were wanting significant draft pick package for Obi Toppin per one of the teams interested. This seemed like an oddity at the time given that the New York Knicks seem intent on not giving Toppin the time he needs to develop.

While it is still not clear the exact package that New York was looking for, the words “significant draft picks” seems to imply that they would want more than just one of the late first rounders that the Pacers may have been offering.

If this is the case, the Pacers did right by not overbidding on Toppin.

If they want to go after him after the season, it looks like New York may not be extending him after all. Which is why the high asking price seems to make little sense to begin with.

That's fair.

I'm thinking solely from a current salary and roster construction standpoint - IQ has a pay day coming up vs. Grimes still being under cost control and I'd take paying Mitch over RJ.

Talent for talent, everything in a vacuum and not taking the current roster or salary into consideration, I'd move RJ and Mitch.
