Bread and circus keeps the ignorant citizenry occupied. Just think, all these protests and political engagement can be partly thanked by there being no sports or other recreation to distract us. The last thing trump or any politician, whether Dem or Rethug, wants is an active, politically engaged society.

Plus, can you imagine the uproar from his base if football is canceled? A sport that literally mirrors War and gives a lot of these deranged cacs a chance to live out their battlefield/plantation field fantasies and they can’t do it because of some stupid Fluhan Chinese Virus hoax that was probably made by the previous administration or some other Democratic boogeyman?

All jokes if they cancel football I might get a gun for my own safety. Them slack jawed yokels might burn the country down....:russ: :ld:

If this fukkboy cared so much he should’ve threw together a “sports commission” that aggressively tailored solutions for a bubble for each league.

At least give off the impression that some shyt like a bubble could work just so every positive player test stays out of the news

Not worried about the 150K people dying while the President sat on his ass and denied that a virus existed? I pray for you Americans, man.
What about all the rounds of golf he's put in while people are dying. He's not even playing against anybody just teeing off and stealing taxpayer's money.

Desus and Mero said it one their second to last podcast but (not condoning or glad people died) Covid has exposed a lot of America’s bullshyt and it might be an opportunity to actually think about what kinda country or even what kinda world this should really be.

Just think, we have 24/7 cycles dedicated to kids games while people starve and die for our benefit. And that was before Corona. I have to say if there’s any good to take from this fukked up pandemic it’s put the fire to the feet of the ones that have done us harm for their benefit.

I've actually been thinking this was part of the reason the 60s & 70s were such an active time in regards to people being active in social movements...less distractions all around. Sports leagues outside of MLB weren't as significant back then & boxing's biggest star was very much active in the Civil Rights Movement. You didn't have all the tech we have now or even had 20 - 30 years ago...people were forced to pay attention to what was going on in this country.

Then after the government systematically broke down and destroyed these movements, I'm sure as sports grew to new commercial heights in the 80s, people found refuge in that. You also had the growth of tech where everyone would now be able to have "an idiot box" in their own home, and you also had arcades popping up to keep kids interested too.

I think those aspects definitely played a part in things. The 60s were a perfect storm of conditions and events and so many different movements converged into that decade.

The NOI and Civil Rights movements reached their heights after building up a decade earlier and they defined Black political, cultural, and economic life in the later generations. These movements inspired sister movements of other groups like Puerto Ricans, Mexicans(Chicanos), Native Americans, Socialist/Communists, Feminists, LGBT, Peace and anti Nuke activists, etc. So it was the beginnings of what we’re seeing today with this intersectional coalition type protest. The Vietnam war divided the whole country and created a protest movement out of college whites. The Cold War was in its most tense times. Assassinations of different high profile political figures. And globally you had revolutions toppling colonial governments and right next door Cuba was defying American hegemony in the region.

I can’t say that we’ve had that amount of activity but there has been activity which have, like the 60s, begun to fully coalesce into what may be their pinnacle forms. BLM is a continuation of the previous decade’s movement against police/mass incarceration/racism while you can say that Antifas and many of the white protesters/Bernie supporters are the product of the more broad Occupy movements of the previous decade. It’s interesting to see what the final outcome might be, given where things are going it might get to 60s level activity with all the factors (racism, environment, economic inequality, etc) creating the atmosphere for intense social movements.
