First of all

I never said Venezuela isn't a socialist country. I said the failure of a country like it with no coherent managers of the economy doesn't mean that socialism or socialist policies can't work. I don't glorify the people running that ship, they've proven incompetent.

I personally believe in mixed policies as I like markets but also favor antitrust and regulations with generous social policies.

And I bring up Somalia as it was a socialist country under Siad Barre. My grandfather was well off but was affected in the 1969 coup due to the policies enacted that limited money supply, etc. Now you have a libertarian's dream. No regulation, money free flowing but in some regions monopolized for the very very few. There's weak governance but it's the Wild West.

Venezuela had ineffective left wing policies such as price controls. They didn't save revenues from oil when it the price was high. THE BIGGEST issue has been their currency management of the Bolivar Fuerte (BsF).

This is a very good article on what's happening in Venezuela's economy. A lot of things predate Hugo Chavez's socialist era. Venezuela is heavily dependent on imports and their economy's reliance on oil has neglected other sectors such as agriculture.
