Gratitude is different from letting people usurp your identity. You can have gratitude without assigning them an identity that isn't theirs. Heritage/identity is precious and blacks need to learn to guard it appropriately. I have a lot of good friends that have been non black over the years. It doesn't change who they are or who I am because of it.

The very Africans who sold my ancestors off did so because they had ethnic pride and not racial pride. They did not see themselves as one black people. They delineated along the lines of the nation they belonged to. So, yes, I'm going to point that out when I see Africans who look down on African Americans and even question our right to call ourselves that; precisely because they're displaying that same tribalist ignorance that aided whites in their plunder of the continent. That's not to say that Africans were the catalyst or the cause, but ignoring that history does not serve anyone well. We still see this destructive thinking, in places like Nigeria where Christians blacks are at odds with Muslim blacks while foreign forces do business as they please. We see it in South Africa where xenophobia has South African blacks at odds with other blacks.

African Americans can claim pan-Africanism until the cows come home, but unless this way of thinking is addressed it's just flowery rhetoric.
