Alright brehs, which anime do you think has the best first episode? like when you watched the first episode you were immediately hooked on to it.

My best would have to be yu yu hakasho because its first episode evoked a lot of emotions out of a niga.. at first the shyt was funny when he lifted up the girls skirt at school and when kuwabara showed up to fight then shyt got depressing when he went home and his mom was like she dont give a fukk about him.. then shyt got a niga teary eyed (no homo) when he died and went to his wake and saw everyone crying for him :to:

Kuwabara at the wake was :sadbron: tooo

Trigun's first episode was so dope. Funny as FUKK.

Samurai Champloo, Cowboy Bebop, YYH, and Outlaw Star are up there too.

Quite a few anime hooked me after the first episode
-Bleach
-Naruto
-Dragon Ball Z
-Death note
-Code Geass
-Fist of the North Star
-Soul Eater
-Xam'd

The only ones that didn't were probably:
-One piece
-Gintama
-Monster
-Fullmetal Alchemist brotherhood
-Cowboy Bebop
-Samurai Champloo
-Gurren Lagann

I still haven't finished monster, FMA brotherhood, Cowboy bebop, Champloo and Guren Lagann. I'll probably get on that during the holidays or over the summer. I also recommend really sticking with Gintama. In my opinion it is the GOAT shonen jump manga/show and I can explain why if anyone asks.

I actually can't think of many anime that have truly incredible first episodes...

Deadman Wonderland? Fullmetal Alchemist? Samurai Champloo? Maybe FLCL?
Gantz has an ill first episode.....

It did actually, but now I wish I never picked up Gantz. It's so fukking terrible, lol.

I'll just copy and paste a blog post I made about it:

The main reason I feel like it is better than its competition is the fact that it does not take itself too seriously. It is a post-modern work of fiction in many senses of the word. It features self-reflectivity, parody, directly addressing the audience—basically it breaks a lot of the rules of fiction, but the key thing here is that the author knows all of the rules very well which allows him to parody them and then break them.

Unlike in a series like One Piece or Naruto, the protagonist does not have a defined goal. While Luffy(One Piece) wants to be king of the pirates, and Naruto(Naruto) wants to become the strongest and most well respected Ninja, the protagonist of Gintama does not have a clearly defined goal. He prefers to just live in peace and eat deserts. The protagonist of Gintama stands in contrast to other Shonen characters because he is an example of what happens after ones goal has been accomplished. He’s bored and lazy, but when the time comes for action he is incredibly strong and resilient. Unlike other Manga series, specifically in the Shonen Jump line, Gintama’s secondary characters still maintain significant roles within the story. They will come in for brief story arcs and then disappear, or they will just be ammended into the general story(which itself is fairly simple, yet hard to define).

Gintama can have story arcs that are comparable to the best, but unlike the rest, they do not drag on too much, there is not a lot of retconning, essentially the story arcs are so tightly written that it is hard to actually complain about plot holes or diminished characters. Gintama is a manga that feels like it has been created by a person who has already thoroughly studied other manga and works of fiction in general.

Basically:
-The story arcs don't drag on too long

-Because the author is a fan of manga, he already knows what complaints people will make before they make them and he jokes about it. The show doesn't take itself seriously 100% of the time.

-It has a life outside of anime because it also parodies video games, celebrities, athletes, etc.

-They can have so many different story arcs because the characters aren't really held down by a singular goal.
-Some of their story arcs are just :wow: specifically the benizakura and Yoshiwara arcs

The D (where it's so cold)
Elfen Lied :merchant:

I need to go back and watch the first ep because I don't remember this getting good until like half way through the series. I almost stopped watching this because the eps were too campy.

Gundam Wing, Big O (I think), Ronin Warriors, Ninja Scroll the series and Ghost In The Shell all had pretty good first episodes. Even though I kind of hated it, Highschool Of The Dead had a good start with the first episode.
