Don't upgrade nothing. As long as you have a water bottle or 2 (I ride with a camelbak), a helmet, a unit tool, and spare tube the only thing you need to do is put some miles on it.

You're falling into a dangerous trap thinking you need to upgrade or spend money/change anything.

Just ride. Trust me, just fukking ride.

What was/is your ride nutrition game like?

At least once a year I do something foolish and go out with just water, thinking I'm just gonna do a few miles. End up 40+ deep and about to die because I'm caught between just trying to go back home or riding to the nearest convenience store to cop some fuel quickly.

The other day I didn't have my bike lock and I wandered out with just water. I didn't grab any gels or granola bar, pack fresh fruit or nothin.

Most gels contain 0 protein, but I've found for my long rides anything over 3hrs if I have protein in addition to my 24 carbs (which is standard for a gel or chew, bar, etc)..I soar through the rest of the ride like nothing.

These days I've been rocking a camelbak and a water bottle. I think I'm going to just start premixing some protein powder with water and taking that with me. Or I could buy a single bottle of muscle milk, boost, ensure, carnation instant breakfast with protein... the protein I use doesn't have casein for quick ingestion. Casein is timed release and you want your body to process that shyt asap and as you know after 1500-2000 your body takes anything and rips through it.

I'm not stopping to eat or drink, on my rides, just keep pushing through.

My diet consists of mostly plant-based. Lots of yams, beans, brown rice, spinach, quinoa, bananas, kale, oatmeal. Of course lots of water. I eat oat meal and banana every morning. The morning of a fondo or long ride I'll add a couple of waffles to my breakfast. I tried gels during rides but they did nothing for me. Now I just take a banana, couple boxes of raisins and some mixed nuts. I mix Vitalyte in one of my water bottles. I'm good for 5+ hour rides.

I have a bunch of gels.

They've worked for me. But then again I've ridden with no nutrition except water. So I know what it's like to be completely depleted.

Before then I'd just do fresh fruit. There's a convenience store right off one of the exits and they sell cups of fresh fruit.

One of the rides we do is called "the BBQ ride". We ride about 20 miles out on the trail then into town grab some BBQ then ride back home.

We have one ride that is every single Thursday called " the taco ride". Hundreds of bikers ride 10 miles, grab tacos, get drunk, ride back...it's usually under control but a few times police had to be on the trail for some people that get too drunk.

Drunks on bikes. Sounds like a good idea to me:pachaha:. I need to start doing some leisurely rides like that.

What does one have to do to be able to do some shyt like that?
It's a gradual process of building up to it. I certainly can't do that as my first bike ride of the season. This ride usually goes down in July so I would have had a couple months of prep to do it. I done it a couple times and both those years I was practically living and commuting on my bike so it wasn't hard. I had started going further and further into the trails in the city first. then touring just outside the city and finally someone told me about the trip so I tried it.

I find biking way easier than running personally because of the lack of impact so I don't feel as much limitations as I would tryna run a 10k or marathon for example. just learning how to pace myself and breath right did it for me. Being with people also helps a lot.
