I was highly disappointed by it.

I was expecting something else. Something deeper. Maybe a crazy theorized look into what happened with the mayans.

Instead it was like a stereotypical B movie. Like a big budget ed wood flick.
Mel made it because he didn't like how action movies became too big, and CGI filled. He wanted a more visceral man on the run movie.

Thats cool but coming off passion of the christ and having such intetesting time era it seemed like a waste just to make a generic chase film.

It sparked a pretty big controversy when it came out.

Many felt it depicted them as savages and used the human sacrificies more associated with aztecs. Plus the ominous ending with the europeans coming in was seen as typical white washing like "dirty savages needing to be saved."

I don't know i havent seen it since the theatrr. I may give it another chance. I just remember being so excited for it and i purposely had read almost nothing about it going in.

Maybe ill like it more now.

I do think mel gibson had a very promising career as a film maker. Too bad hes such a scum bag lol.

That's literally the first time I've seen someone interpret it like that. Me and my friend who both love the movie always thought it was more like you can only outrun extinction for so long. There are always gonna be groups with an insatiable lust for more power, one after another, and the peaceful people are the ones that pay the price.

When the movie came out it was discussed extensively.

Mind you the movie came out in the midst of gibsons public image being destroyed with his racist and anti semitic comments. So the movie was dissected.

I'm surprised you've never heard that it was a fairly big controversy at the films release.

I only watched it once, but god damn that was an experience. It was right around the time I first got a blu-ray player and a big ass TV, smoked a blunt to the head and watched this like :whoo:

shyt will trip you out because life used to be so brutal, and short. When they're walking up the pyramid to get their head cut off on some sacrificial shyt damn near gave me a panic attack :wow:

never seen someone interpret that way either, and I still don't see the logic. It ended like that because that literally happened around that time period, it's almost ironic, you escape such a crazy experience with your life, only to see that shyt on the horizon.

Film is fantastic. My bro and I were just watching tv one day and it came on. As soon as they started herding those dudes for the sacrifice we were hooked until the end. The cat-and-mouse chase, the traps, the jaguar giving that dude that work.etc. At that time it was the most entertaining film I had seen in a few years.

Yeah I don't know where that dude is coming from. If you know your history then you knew what was up. I was like they're truly fukked now.

I'm not coming from anywhere. Those are the things that were said about the film at release. I provided links and you can easily look it up for yourself.

You obviously dont remember the films release.

I'm not saying theyre right or wrong but thats what was said.

Heres another article.

Mel Gibson's road to rehabilitation after his anti-semitic outburst last summer appears to have hit a pothole: his Mayan epic Apocalypto has been condemned by a Guatemalan official for painting Mayan people in a derogatory light.

Ricardo Cajas, Guatemala's presidential commissioner on racism, said yesterday the film had set back understanding of the Mayan people by 50 years and compared its impact to that of the negative images of Native Americans in US movies from the 1950s. More than half of the population of Guatemala are descended from the original Mayans.

The fact that this film was made in Mexico and filmed in the Yucatec Maya language coupled with its visual appeal makes it all the more dangerous. It looks authentic; viewers will be captivated by the crazy, exotic mess of the city and the howler monkeys in the jungle. And who really cares that the Maya were not living in cities when the Spanish arrived? Yes, Gibson includes the arrival of clearly Christian missionaries (these guys are too clean to be conquistadors) in the last five minutes of the story (in the real world the Spanish arrived 300 years after the last Maya city was abandoned). It is one of the few calm moments in an otherwise aggressively paced film. The message? The end is near and the savior has come. Gibson's efforts at authenticity of location and language might, for some viewers, mask his blatantly colonial message that the Maya needed saving because they were rotten at the core

I haven't watched it since I saw it the first time, I'll rewatch it with this in mind and see how it comes off, but it didn't come off to me in that manner but indeed I wouldn't think too deeply about a fukkin mel gibson movie and was distracted by the visceral visual nature of the film

Like I said it came out during the height of gibsons public meltdown so its possible people were reaching but suffice to say the film garnered a lot of heat at release.

I only remember because i legit was hyped to see the film and followed it at the time.

No denying its beautifully made though. Wish mel still made films.

Though hes rumoured to be making a viking film.

:ahh:
I loved the visuals for the movie although the story wasn't anything special. As mentioned the time period in which the Mayans left their cities and the arrival of the Spaniards are not historically correct.
