The stigma was different back in the day before social media, the internet and even mainstream tv. Lots of women in junior high looked a lot older than they were and sometimes it was hard to tell. Dudes would be posted up on the block hollering at whoever they found attractive with no care for age. Also that generation grew up seeing their parents who got married and started families a lot earlier than today's generation. It wasn't a big deal unless the age difference was way out there.
