Had 2 copies...an original with the survival of the fittest def jam bonus cd included that I would leave at home...and a bootleg one that I would walk around with in my cd player...

man, my CD collection got stolen, but i had the version with the def jam cd as well

I'll never forget the summer of 98. That was the summer before eighth grade and my friends brother just got his license and all we did all summer was ride around getting into trouble playing the hell out of this album, N.O.R.E. and oddly enough the the first Sunz Of Man album. Good times....

It started that super aggro, synth heavy, sample free, microwaved keyboard beat phase that all but buried the roots of hip hop productions glory years.

The stuff that happened after that album is some of the worst shyt I've ever heard. fukkin clue & duro, megahertz, DJ shok, just blazes initial keyboard stuff, Ron browz etc.

It ruined NYC hip hop IMO. that's not to say it's not a dope album but it's ramifications were deadly on the sound of NYC.

Can you expand on this? if you said Flesh of My Flesh I'd absolutely agree. I thought the production wasn't that bad on Hell is Hot.

X had 98 on smash. Jay's "Hard Knock Life" blew but didn't really blow till more into 99'. I was a senior in high school so I remember it well. X pretty much smashed the summer, then he had the fall and winter on smash cause of Belly movie and soundtrack. Then he dropped "Flesh of my Flesh" in Dec. It easily one one of the greatest years and entrances for a rapper in history. Mind you in 97' he was ripping some really high profile callobo's. Bad Boy just killed it in 97' then X came right along. X forever has my respect for dropping 2 quality albums within like 6 months of each other. But when "Get At Me Dog" dropped. It was like wow, the energy. Also people talking about how "DMX killed the shiny suit movement". 1st it wasn't a movement, it was just a joke about 2 Puffy videos where they wore those shinny jumpsuits. It was more symbolism of commercialize hip hop at the time. Well if you want to be fair. When DMX started he was kind of an unofficial member of Bad Boy. He was on Ma$e album on 2 songs. He was on The Lox Album. He had Faith, Lox and Ma$e on his debut album. So yes he did bring the grimy back to NY but he didn't end Bad Boy or Puff cause he rode with them too. He said in an interview Big would of been on his album if he lived.
