man, i literally remember KRS1 and REDMAN and ANGIE had a video on BET called "a friend" and that was the last i saw of that era. it was all downhill from there.

but it literally seems like it happened overnight, almost like the grunge era. that glam rock shyt was dead.
the difference is that glam rock dudes have said they're glad that era was done, it needed to die
they KILLED black nationalism in our music, it FELT orchestrated if that makes sense

It was and people always said that "the streets" didn't like black empowerment songs anymore, despite with dope rap and dope beats with solid content. :stopitslime:

Maybe "the streets" hated seeing intelligent black folk get shine. :sas2:

cause it can lead to this

Hitler is same shyt different day to the Diaspora. He was not an anomaly, he was business as usual. Those not within the Diaspora who don't want to acknowledge whom his tactics were first practised on, and by whom, ... won't.

this movement lost it's appeal for a number of reasons. 1 black men failing in taking an charge in what goes on in their hood.

I got negged for making that point. But I also got dapped.

As for political leaders, I didn't get woke til the Bush years and Hillary's narcissistic search for relevancy and the history books. Instead of serving black folk, nikkas acted like feminists and served the party regardless of the real needs of those they represented. No integrity, lots of grift.

The black church fell apart when women outnumbered men in the pews but not the pulpit, and the prosperity scams took root to prey upon them.

Black schooling fell apart when nikkas used schools as daycare instead of taking charge of children's education. If you can't be bothered to follow up on your child's life beyond cursing the admin out for discipline, there's a problem.

What would it take to get more black folk certified to home school? All them bytches with nothing to do in the projects... Why not make this their something to do? Kill two birds with one stone.

i'm an 80s baby(whom grew up in the 90s) from the South so even when the black nationalism was mainstream in the 80s to early 90s i wasn't conscious of it:yeshrug:if i had to guess i would say whitey being disturbed about blacks taking pride in themselves/heritage being promoted to the masses and decided to end all that by changing the direction of popular black culture into gangterism we still have today

btw..while it precedes the black nationalist scene of the 80s/90s is my favorite Pan Africanism song:blessed:

and all those they not really talking about nothing i dig the jazzy Erykah Badu Afrocentric vibe of this song from these 2 sisters i found while looking up Yoruba gods last year

Pills and other drugs became more marketable around 1997. The rave era hit white people, the script game started blowing up, which in turn led to the new heroin wave...The most popular Stim is meth, and that never hit black folks. They're trying with molly.
Lean = Boy.
molly = Meth...
We'll see what happens in 5 years...
OH, and gentrification has a hidden issue: A great deal of those young middle class white folks moving in are nursing dope habits. They ain't just moving to the city for real estate.

Gentrification is one of the best things that can happen for a dealer with social skills who still live in that area. New upmarket clientel with more spare cash to spare with the developed liberal drug habits they picked up from college.

The first question should be, "What is Black Nationalism?"
Because that wasn't answered then, and that's why it fell apart. There was social consciousness, anti-authoritarianism, and Afro-centrism. There was also admiration of Black leaders.
And that was it.
So the rappers talked back to, and occasionally defied the police. So they grandstanded on stage and made long-political speeches. So they dropped good tracks that talked about systemic issues.
That was it.
There wasn't an endgoal - any goal, really. They were sitting around, reading good literature and smoking weed.
The 5% added an ethno-religious aspect to it, but they didn't do anything but "drop knowledge" and occasionally donate Christmas presents to the hood.
The whole movement in music and thought (outside of the Marxists and Maoists, who were just extensions of the Black Panther Party), wasn't setting out to do anything. It was a bunch of circle jerking that didn't lead to much change in the community at large :yeshrug:
