atheists just believe in one less god than you do, otherwise they are the same.

also the bible got the easiest moral question of humanity (slavery) wrong. why would i shape my life around the guidance of a book when it gets such a basic thing wrong?

Common misunderstanding of the Bible

Far from lauding the virtues of slavery, the Bible denounces slavery as sin. The New Testament goes so far as to put slave traders in the same category as adulterers, liars, murderers, and perverts 1 Timothy 1:10.

With reference to slavery in the Old Testament, you must remember context. Slavery had nothing to do with race but instead economic realities. There was no way to default on money owed so people entered indentured servatude. A skilled man could use his craft in servitude to discharge a debt, and a thief could even make restitution in that way.. The Bible always required the fair and humane treatment of these slaves. If you couldn't provide for your self and your family you found a rich man you could work for and thus provide for your family.. Sort of like the JOBS we have now..

Not to mention the servant debt was to be discharged after 7 years.. Hardly slavery the way we see it today.

treating a slave fairly would be like treating a prostitute as a wife... not happening.

then i had this one friend of mine who is the most complicated eater i know. that nicca will question everything that's cooked. he wants to know everything about the food. how it was cooked. what spices were used. what temperature the cook was before eating. if you answer everything he'll still make sure he comes up with something you didn't see coming. we were part of a big group and me and him didn't talk much.. just lightly cause we were in the same group. he's one of them jesus freaks. he avoided me. i avoided him. one time he got in my nervous with him dumb ass questions and i hit him with 'why don't you question what you feed your brain more than what you feed your stomach' and the whole everyone just burst out laughin... he just let it go and didn't even wanna go there. he's still my homie though i don't fuq with them ppls no more. they were a waste of my time.

Black guy atheist checking in. I swear I've never seen so many black atheists in my life. That just goes to show the power of the free flow of information on the internet. Ain't no way you can talk about this stuff in real life, at least not among most black folks.

Feelin proud

I've never understood this idea that atheism makes you freer or more enlightened than anyone else.. Prescribing to a school of thought is simply that, prescribing to a school of thought. It seems that many atheists are a mirror image of the evangelical Christians they mock- proselytizing their message to all who will listen. They both espouse the need to preach their message at all costs and that the fate of mankind depends on it. Oh the hypocrisy..

Do atheists have a better understanding of the world around them than say me, a Christian? Or a Muslim? Or a Buddhist? Here's a novel question.. Are all atheist freethinkers? And furthermore, are all freethinkers atheists? Aren't the means by which one comes to the conclusion of theism vs atheism what determines free thought? I consider myself a freethinker while I hold the Bible to be the infallible Word of God. This was done not by blind faith- "because my Bible says so", but through a bona fide, honest, and consistent attempt to weigh claims and evidence by which I came to a conclusion. No one has all of the answers, but if after an honest evaluation of all available evidence one makes a conclusion that isn't inherited, coerced, or ridden in guilt, then they are thinking freely and should be commended, no?

Afterall, a child growing up in an atheist household and never examining their non-belief is no different than a child growing up in a Christian household never examining their belief.

being an atheist doesnt make you a free thinker. Just means you dont have a belief in gods. Its not prescribing to a school of thought. You seem to just have a plethora of bad information. You would really benefit from doing some studying. The fate of mankind actually does depend on it though, with a world full of irrational theists with their hands on nuclear weapons and wanting to bring on "Armageddon" I'd say our future rests on being rational, and not subscribing to the myths created by iron age sheep herders, who thought that you make striped and spotted goats by mating them in front of a striped stick (Gen 30:37-39).

And you consider this inerrant?

I would agree.. Being an atheist does not make you a free thinker as many suppose. The process by which one comes to their conclusions makes them a free thinker.
And yes, atheism is a school of thought- afterall, is it not a philosophy that is reasoned over? Do not atheists give a reasoned answer as to why they don't believe in a god? Do not atheists have debates with theists?

Saying I have a plethora of bad information without sufficiently refuting my statements is just bad debating..

I would agree that theists with their hands on nuclear weapons and wanting to bring on "Armageddon" IS a thing of conern but you can't blame the Bible for that.. Where in the Bible does it prescribe people to do anything with regards to the ending of the world? Irrational people get their ideas from everywhere but it doesn't mean the source from which they attribute their ideas is irrational.

With regards to the Genesis passage, I don't see how the Bible reiterating a custom commonly practiced by shepards makes it errant.. Does my history book describing how Aztecs worshiped the sun make the history book errant?

No, atheism is NOT a philosophy, it is the rejection of one. Atheism is no more a philosophy than baldness is a hair color. I am saying you have a plethora of bad information because you do, like saying atheism is a philosophy.

The reason the Genesis passage is troubling is because A) the passage suggests that it works (and according to you is the inerrant word of 'god') B) Your god did nothing to tell Jacob that what he was doing was dumb as hell and did not explain genetics to him.

The reason irrational theists intent on bringing Armageddon is solely the fault of religion is because without the dumbass idea of armageddon they wouldnt have the idea of bringing on armageddon. That is 100% the fault of irrational belief in god and iron aged scribblings of uneducated sheep herders.

being what is labeled an atheist is a "freer" thinker ie. one less thing to worry about. we live in a heavily programmed society so there is no such such thing as a free society or a free mind.

Atheism is the rejection of a god and further goes on to explain how the god idea is born from ignorance and fear- aka a philosophy. I apprehend the desire of atheists to yell that they don't associate with anything but you can't have an atheist convention anymore than a Star Wars convention and not call it a philosophy- a way of life.
Ironically, the case is made by most atheists that atheism expresses the growth of the human mind which makes it a philosophy whereas theism, in their minds, is static and can't be a philosophy by definition.

The fact of the matter is God blessed Jacob IN SPITE of his superstitious use of the striped rods. This is a common theme with Jacob in context as God is constantly shaping him. We see that Jacob is always doing things his way and then pleading to God for help. It isn't until two chapters later that Jacob wrestled with God and finally "got it".
The intent of the Bible isn't to teach people science or genetics. We look to nature for that. You may be looking for the Bible to explain something that it was never intended to explain.

The idea of an Armageddon is presented as a spiritual one and not an earthly one in the Bible. Because some people interpret it in an incorrect way is not the fault of the text. People will use whatever they can to justify their agendas.
