IMO the bigger problem with Godfather III was Robert Duvall not returning. There were many Godfather III ideas and halfwritten scripts that were thrown out over the years/decade, but perhaps the most interesting was one about Michael and Tom falling out.

Sounds far more interesting. Also Connie found out Michael killed Fredo, causing her to side with Tom against Michael. The war would also involve Michael's son, who was a US senator; iirc the idea was that Michael's son, who was clean-ish, would be killed and thus result in complete mayhem.

Copolla allegedly wanted Travolta to play Vincent.
Sounds mildly interesting but nobody wants to see the gawd Tom Hagen as the villain :patrice: There were way too many scumbags in the Godfather universe to finally wind up with Micheal having to go against Tom. But yeah they really f*cked up by wasting Micheal's son character like that. what a waste

Plus 2 was brother vs brother would have kind of been a rehash.

I think it would've made for an interesting film . A chess game between Michael and Tom. Tom bitter for the way he was treated in GF2. Anything would've been better than the mess of a script that eventually decided on.

But Tom wasn't "a wartime consigliere". He was definitely a smart dude and the glue of the family but he wasn't really built for war. Plus he wasn't Italian so I don't know if he could get Italian familia goons on his side or if he would have to just hire random goons.

You know hollywood though... .They can make up anything they want. It could've been more of a cerebral war. Tom taking out Michael without him recognizing. But like I said, anything couldve been better than the final product. They rushed it.

I thought Part III was a good movie. It's just that people can't separate it from the first two which were masterpieces.
i was reading your post with a tyson lisp :deadrose: but you are right. the first 2 set the bar to high.... and the third one was released to late and acumullated to much hype
