Africa has a lot of potential. Commoditizing minerals in addition to various plans could bring in profit.

minerals do not even come close to the amount of money you can make from manufacturing, the industrial revolution has bypassed africa and africa has to catch up

minerals are commodities, its like orange juice, if you want any commodity you go into the market and buy it for some change, there is money to be made in commodities but if you spread it out among 1 billion people, half of whom are illiterate both reading and financial wise, its essential nothing

the only way africa can get wealthy is through industrialization and education, its not through minerals

mineral potential is ok, but the real potential in africa is human potential from eradicating illiteracy and advanced higher education which leads to industrialization

I can't speak on this really, since I never been over there. I'm weary of this, since I doubt anyone but Africans have Africa's best interest. I can't wait to hit up Lagos or Nairobi next year to somewhat see this firsthand.

With that said, African born posters, what's your stance on this?
@2Quik4UHoes @Don Drogo @Broke Wave @Chris.B

Also, we can't shyt on Africa for being broke, when they just got out on colialism. Not too mention all the industries/resource refineries/etc are still owned by the former people in charge, so they're basically taking loans since they're don't have the funds to mine/refine resources.

Africa has a lot of potential and sadly some africans/blacks/etc do not see the future with Africa. Quite frankly some Africans have become sellouts nor do they lack the objectivity, nor want to fix things because they feel the situation there is hopeless. They might identify whats going on, but at the same time they need to be willing to fix things.

All of Africa is not broke, there is a thriving middle class, several millionaires and there are a few 'hidden' billionaires in Africa, who are not in the Forbes list.

Africa has some much potential that someone could make a few trillion currencies from the continent, but money is not everything.

I was chatting with several Africans and they agreed that African needs leaders to spur change.

There is such a hidden gem in Africa, and you gotta visit, go visit Abuja, Lagos, Nairobi, Cape Town, Johannesburg, etc

There is status quo but there is success everywhere.

I think its the president fault if people are poor (no talking about lazy people) but people who are in desolate areas.

Africa could be improved. Black america could be improved. Anywhere there are blacks there could be improvement, just a better life for blacks all around because it seems the system is out to get them and because of such microcosm and lack founded community (slavery) there is a self-hate, disrespectful mentality amongst some blacks. Not that such human condition does not exists with whites, heck whites kill themselves, were barbaric, etc...but blacks created pyramids and made and made such huge contributions. Also blacks doing well, benefits everybody and welcomes variety.

What africa/african countries need is run their environment like a business, a delicate mix between for profit and a non for profit center. Africa Inc. The citizens, permanent resident, contributors are the "shareholders". Also, United States of Africa does have a nice ring to it. Some African countries needs reform:

What africa needs is:

a) dynamic leader, whose focus is the people and their success, also the leader is undeterred to foreign influence, and uses foreign interests to improve the country
b) a committed and dedicate team (a team of delegation/advisers from local to international investments, competitive tariffs, education, politics, job market, foreign market, tourism, eradicating terrorism, etc)
c) rebuilding for infrastructure (water, electric/solar energy, internet, etc) and aesthetics
d) silent investors
e) job market improvement
d) communal safety
f) policies enforcement
g) health care
h) social security
i) provides/promotes products and services

All those things are there, and are probably being worked on, although someone to go in there with a team and improve things would be good

As to China and foreign investors, African countries have to ask: what is the African game plan for China and foreign investors.

Africa countries make money, sometimes they go into a partnership with a foreign company at a 50%+50% business venture, in additional to charging the foreign company tax.

Sure tax is a potential revenue for government, so the more people are doing better and their business are doing better, the more profit/gross revenue the government makes.

There are a lot of minerals to financial exploit. Some of the mineral groups include, Diamond, Talc, Apatite, Fluorite, Caclite, Orthoclase, Quartz, Corundum, etc Diamond is the breakout mineral. De Beers has monopolized Diamond. Diamond mined in a year is approximately $9 billion USD. De Beer and their diamonds products and services (there is a markup) made about $6 billion USD in one year. Minerals would benefit a business investment portfolio. As for other minerals, there could be an exploratory group, marketing, promotion, etc. Very few countries and companies could make the product, and then its market to the world, market it to the united states, whoever wants materiel mineral things, lolheck it would probably bring down the price of diamond, but it would make the mineral market a lot more ppen and competitive.

As to literacy, there are a lot of literate Africans. Actually the majority of those who immigrate to the United States are literate, more so than, any other group immigrating to the United States.

What Africa needs is also unity. Cultures, tribes, religion are cool, but united, there has to be a stand of one accord. Violent/terrorism deference cannot be tolerated.
Africa needs its own education system, there has gotta a group/team for that. Although, there are a lot of education folks in Africa. What Africa needs is job creation, job growth, business initiatives, business trade zones, business start up initiatives. An outlet for Africans to create business with governmental support. Without the hoopla or the politricks or corruption of running a business. Really a mind-state change. Albeit there are successful businesses in Africa, and some countries in Africa have a middle class and some millionaires and billionaires.

Education, requires an opportunity to use that education. Also, there needs to be plans to keep local talent and also export educated talent. Kinda how india is exporting its human capital. There has got to be a build it, do for self - let the community benefit mentality, and there has gotta be an improving mentality. Make your products and services and sell it to locally, nationally and geo regional communities. Improve what already exists - refurb, repair factories.

There needs to an avenue to invent and market ideas and products. Recruiting Africans from the West and creating a car brands, marketing to Africans. Or having locals make their concept of a car and making the car and selling them the car. Building factories. Or improving a car and seeing if the improved parts could be sold in the aftermarket industry.

A lot of china success in china, because of its massive population, really china copies what the west has done, and slightly improve it or making it more compatible for locals.

You really dont have to be advanced to make money, just need a product/service people would buy, but there is a lot of potentials that should not go unnoticed.

Many of us black American men and women need to acquire an education and go to Africa to help out. We blacks need to help each other because no one gives a shyt about us. Not the Chinese, not the Europeans, not the Americans.

If I ever get rich I would assemble my own private army and invade one of those corrupt African countries and establish a free/open market/capitalist society. I would divide said country into competing sovereign states like Switzerland (and how the U.S. was supposed to be). I would establish a central bank not owned by the Rothschilds and create a gold-backed currency. Although I'd imagine the CIA would get involved and stop me somehow.

point blank, you dont know what you are talking about, the math doesnt pan out, 9 billion dollars is nothing compared to the amount of money manufacturers make

i think its a good idea to maximize money from minerals, but the math is simply not there as for as creating wealth in the general population

As to literacy, there are a lot of literate Africans. Actually the majority of those who immigrate to the United States are literate, more so than, any other group immigrating to the United States.

yeah there are a lot of literate people in africa, the average literacy rate in africa is about 50%, so half the people in africa can't read, the other half can and that stymies development, for a developed country the literacy rate is 90%

what africa has is a huge illiterate population, and i tiny population with advanced degrees,

im not sure what immigrants to the us have to do with anything, i thought we were talking baout developing africa, not developing the united states

What Africa needs is also unity. Cultures, tribes, religion are cool, but united, there has to be a stand of one accord. Violent/terrorism deference cannot be tolerated.

all that is fine except your last part, you need an advanced degree to develop new technologies, you dont want to end up like the chinese who just copy american technology and you need people with advance degrees to industrialize

the lack of people with advanced degrees is one of the main things holding africa back and its one of the reason companies are not interested in opening factories in africa, what is the point of opening an iphone factory in africa, for example, if people cant read instructions and dont understand advanced electronics?

That's the key issue right now, the raw material is worthless if there are no refineries to process the minerals/material etc. I'm Eritrean and our country well, it's not doing too good because of our president but we tried to establish good connections with Asian countries such as China and S.Korea but their only mission is to extract all the resources and process them in their own country.

I said this in another thread, Korea came to our country, built a residential area and not only overcharged us but used their own people to build the place which does nothing to our economy. Also, the country is located right next to the red sea so it's a pretty important location hence Israel having their second largest navy base on our island.

In regards to the rest of Africa, there is no other alternative then to work with Asia in general. Most of their countries rely on raw material to maintain their manufacturing and developing industry and therefore need Africa's resources to continue their global production dominance. What African leaders need to do is to use their advantage to force Asian factories to rely on African workers to take care of the cargo/shipping/in-town preparation etc. This leasing out land to foreign companies is not doing anything to their country's economy and will definitely not be sustainable in the long run.

a quick glance and you might not understand the numbers, but the numbers do make sense

very few can build wealth that is why very few are wealthy

most people are designed to be worker bees.

there are some money in manufacturing but a small family or group probably own a bulk of the company. the 6 billion that De Beers makes, De Beers has 20,000 employees to pay from that. The Oppenheimer's own De Deers and the Oppenheimer's worth a couple billions.

i think its a good idea to maximize money from minerals, but the math is simply not there as for as creating wealth in the general population

Like I said, true wealth would have to appear in the form of diversification of businesses. There are 10 minerals groups. 1 mineral group out of 10 groups, which Diamonds is worth 9 billion in mining. Say the other mineral groups were explored, marketed and promoted, all 10 groups could be worth 100 billion USD. A small team with financiers and marketing team could make it happen, lets says its expanded to employees, then employees have income in desolate areas, not everyone is going to be rich. Now was part of exploring, if maybe the condition, like American oil companies, is if I develop your land, figure the numbers, expoit the natural resources, I am willing to cut you and your city a percentage of profits, then the community might make extra money without working. 6 billion a year business pays the salary for 20,000 people and the company is still keeping net profits. Its not going to be simple to share all gross generated monies to the entire population, after net income, maybe some bonuses could go around, but if the goal is to acquire wealth for million and billion of people, then, any and every potential is a possible for business income for a business portfolio. There would need to be a dedicated team focused on make money and the locals could get a royalty bonus or compensated social benefits. Or every and anything could be state/country owned, it would be competitive, any potential business would have to be a vendor to the state/country, even at a state/country level, all employees would engage in profit sharing.

yeah there are a lot of literate people in africa, the average literacy rate in africa is about 50%, so half the people in africa can't read, the other half can and that stymies development, for a developed country the literacy rate is 90%

Its actually 33% and not 50% the bigger picture is how are the 33% who can read doing? what are they doing? are their potential maxmized? literacy based on what? english? french? why should they read/write english or french? can they speak a local language? can they make money and survive from a natural/local language? If english/french is the primary language cool, but when 33% learn to "read" "write" who is going to give them job? Are there enough jobs to go around?

what africa has is a huge illiterate population, and i tiny population with advanced degrees

im not sure what immigrants to the us have to do with anything, i thought we were talking baout developing africa, not developing the united states

There are a lot of educated folks in Africa who speak their natural dialets, English, French, etc despite the illiterate minority in Africa, African countries leads in literacy when moving to the USA. Folks from USA could help to develop/purchase African products/services.

all that is fine except you last part, you need an advanced degree to develop new technologies, you dont want to end up like the chinese who just copy american technology and you need people with advance degrees to industrialize

Industrialization is cool but it also cost money to make money. Advanced degrees are cool, but really being inventive is were the money is made. The chinese take a model from the united states and make it work and they make money from it. There is no sense to reinvent the wheel. There is a fine line, but simple life is ok too. Also the industrialize countries have more stress and more diseases, but dont let potential pass you bye.

the lack of people with advanced degrees is one of the main things holding africa back and its one of the reason companies are not interested in opening factories in africa, what is the point of opening an iphone factory in africa, for example, if people cant read instructions and dont understand advanced electronics?

Advanced degree really create and maintain jobs. Howeber, there are some with advanced degrees in Africa who cant find work. There are also a number of factories built in Africa, although, I think Africa could use more factories. Africa also has an image problem there approximately 850 million who are literate, to use those numbers, so they can read/write. I have talked with those in electronic manufacturing and those executives dont "know" how to approach Africa. People can read/write/etc, but their more concerned about infrastructure, electricity, to which, one could build an electric plant. They are also concerned with corruption. The richest black man, who is from Africa, has several factories including a cement factory, as part of building his cement factory, he built electrical plant to generate electricity for his cement factory. Also china has cheap labor, and american companies are looking at how to be profitable. China might have a high literacy rate, but are they understandable when they initially learn english? So blacks really got to do for self.

Africa countries really should require 51%+ of African workforces to be used on foreign developments, or pay a surtax. Then the foreign expat should teach the local expat how to maintain the factory/buildings.

Most Zambians( where I am now) seem to be positive about major Chinese influence in this country. It's provided much needed infrastructure and construction projects, and they work on projects that are neglected by Western donors, who tend to focus mainly on maternal health and early childhood education.

You also cannot leave out the link it is has developed for Africans in China as well. Many have begun to study in higher ed. institutions in China and even have started some private enterprises there.

again 100 billion is nothing, i posted a link before that shows nigeria makes 90 billion from oil, that is nothing compared with its population of 300 million

you are completely misunderstanding the math, there is no way minerals can provide sustainable wealth to essentially 1 billion people, real wealth, in the modern world, comes from developing human resources, it doesnt come from minerals

what rich nations have in common isnt resources, for example japan has ZERO natural resources, yet its one of the richest in the world,

what rich nations have in common is highly educated populations and also i think the most successful black nations are the small island nations in the caribbean, and IMO its because they have 90% literacy, and haiti which has 50% literacy is the least developed

Its actually 33% and not 50% the bigger picture is how are the 33% who can read doing? what are they doing? are their potential maxmized? literacy based on what? english? french? why should they read/write english or french? can they speak a local language? can they make money and survive from a natural/local language? actually no, it is 50%, i have no idea what they are doing, im just saying you cannot develop a nation that is illiterate, you need 90 percent illiteracy to get it cracking and it actually doesnt matter what language

africa has no written languages, so learning a local african language has nothing to do with literacy, im not sure what your point is about jobs, why would somebody hire somebody that cant read, that is the real question, and people should know how to read period regardless of a job, reading allows people to communicate, to educate themselves and to be more productive

literacy is important because it allows you to train people and increase their productivity, for example most african countries have constitutions, how would a person even know what your rights are if you cannot read the constitution, how would you know who to vote for if you can't read a newspaper, how would you train somebody to build a car or cellphone if they cant read

im not sure where you are going with this, reading is fundamental to development so im not even sure what it is you are arguing about, are you trying to suggest that literacy is optional?

6 billion and 20000 employees

I already provided examples on how socializing an entire country would work.

i posted a link before that shows nigeria makes 90 billion from oil, that is nothing compared with its population of 300 million

As I said, a country with a wealthy majority is rare and an uneasy task. There are 9.2 millionaires in america which has 300 million people. Only 3% of Americans are millionaires
Nigeria is not currently set up to feed a nation of 300 million. The net of 90 billion USD goes to a government budget/agenda. Communism might open up the net of 90 billion USD to everyone. Running a country like a business, were citizens are shareholders might open it up to everyone

provide sustainable wealth to essentially 1 billion people, real wealth, in the modern world

you understand what I am saying, lets not play dumb around here. As I said in the previous post, a myriad of diversified business venture could feed a nation. Royality payments to locals (Which is done in Alaska). State/country sponsored businesses which existed in Libya/North Korea, etc. Diversified means owning a porfolio of businesses. Maybe a company/ elite group needs to generate 1 billion trillion dollars or more, heck if 400 global ultra rich folks from various business are worth 1.3 trillions USD...there really is no a limit, if its just money to gain. of course the minerals business is part of it, whoe else is turning minerals into a commodity besides de beers ceo and cronies, and several small companies, not many people, its an untapped marketed. Also de beers goes into equity deals with african countries, so african countries are eating off of de beers and other business ventures.

what rich nations have in common isnt resources, for example japan has ZERO natural resources, yet its one of the richest in the world

you dont make sense. A smart business person would take $100 billion USD from the mineral business and combine it with over ventures or turn it into more money. As of 2008, 46.4 percent of energy in Japan is produced from petroleum, 21.4 percent from coal, 16.7 percent from natural gas, 9.7 percent from nuclear power, and 2.9 percent from hydropower. what are you talking about Japan has natural and synthesized energy. Africa could build their own/enhance their businesses and resources.

what rich nations have in common is highly educated populations and also i think the most successful black nations are the small island nations in the caribbean, and IMO its because they have 90% literacy, and haiti which has 50% literacy is the least developed

blacks is and could be successful, wherever, blacks success is not limited to Carribean, those areas are also sole tourist business zones.
haiti challenges are not solely from literacy. ever since the haitian revolution, the west, stopped messing with haiti, because haiti wanted to be independent and violently fought off the french

actually no, it is 50%, i have no idea what they are doing, im just saying you cannot develop a nation that is illiterate, you need 90 percent illiteracy to get it cracking and it actually doesnt matter what language

The tests are usually based on whether they could read/write english, or the national language. according to your math, the country with "50%" literacy (with another "50%" to go) would do doing so good because those who could read/write mere English/national language, so they should be will be sooooooooo financially welllllllllllll off.

Africa does shows improvement maybe it was 50% in 1990s, but its climbed to 66% literacy. So now 66% who are literate, should be doing really really good lol

africa has no written languages, so learning a local african language has nothing to do with literacy

lol, are you serious? what were the egyptians writing about in 600 AD, hieroglyphs, all those pharaohs and tombs and archive were hieroglyphs and variations. These developed later into forms known as Hieratic and Demotic. Still later in ancient history, this system was adapted to the Meroitic script in the upper Nile valley. The african oral and written languages have progressed. There are african languages documented to the 1st century.

why would somebody hire somebody that cant read, that is the real question

are you dense? not everyone in Africa cant read/write. If you can read and write, why arent you getting all the of jobs and opportunity? African need to do for self. Also they have been successes found by those who are passionate about an idea inspite of the educational backgrounds. There are also economies for menial labor. Not everyone who could read, write is creating successful businesses, it might be easier, but I wont count the local out. why wont big businesses hire all of the 66% which is approximately 850 million who could read/write? Its not because of literacy. Anyways, Africa gotta build big businesses.

people should know how to read period regardless of a job, reading allows people to communicate, to educate themselves and to be more productive

you think people who cant read/write english/national language are really idling around? what are you reading western survey? if you so inclined about literacy go over there and teach courses. if you are smart, maybe you could turn it into a business...whats that millions who cant read/write, maybe you could teach them and create a business model for them to enhance their lives lol....go save them. Seriously, this is not a bad idea...one could present some solutions to government or ngos. I doubt 170 million illiterate really don't know how to function. Folk from the trailer parks or backwards hoods, dont get jobs or find work? Only illiterates are unemployed? All literates are working?

literacy is important because it allows you to train people and increase their productivity, for example most African countries have constitutions, how would a person even know what your rights are if you cannot read the constitution, how would you know who to vote for if you can't read a newspaper, how would you train somebody to build a car or cellphone if they cant read
they find a community to show them. do you know only 50% in america are actually registered to vote. they says 90% of communication is non verbal...common sense cant be taught, its innate...one thing the illiterate should not be, is marginalized, bring them into the community if they are outside of the community, most of illiteracy are language barriers and schooling, but that is not a requirement for success. If they have a challenges they could be inventive. Use pictures to teach them, they are not stupid. How do foreign country assemble cars designed in the united states? Or design phones in the united states? One teaches them in the process or language they know. Do the 66% / 850 million literate Africans have access to similar factories created in China? illiteracy is an excuse if business don't want to make money in Africa.

reading is fundamental to development, are you trying to suggest that literacy is optional?

A multiple tiered approach is ideal. Work on improving literacy in attention to the list of goals to improve the country.

So they cant read/write, what are the plans? teach them how to read/write, well, see how the plan could implemented. Implement it, or get it, into the hands of those who can. Now what, they could read/write and want more. Give them books. Tell them about their history. Get them into a schooling system, if they dont already have their own community and support systems. Bring them into the national foray of doing things. The labor force/tax base would increase, feed their "hungers". Dont let them forget their original language. Teach them a universal language but dont sell their soul. Let them know another langues but financial benefit from it to.

All of such goes on, while still focused on the master plan of improving the country.

Running a country like a business, were citizens are shareholders might open it up to everyone.

I agree with this. Businesses don't usually allow others to dictate their plans and actions and control their products. Businesses are usually interested in success at every level.

I don't feel that African nations should have to pay back any debt owed to the West or to China... Colonization negates that debt. The US, france, and UK, etc should pay any debt owed to Asia by Africa.

The US is controlled by corporations but is not ran like a business. It's ran like a monarchy with a ruling family. No one else matters outside of the top 1%. African nations don't need that same blueprint because history and current tribal and cultural situations have shown us that when African nations try that model it ends in bloodshed and corruption by Western nation's African elite puppets.

It doesn't seem right for Africans to set shyt up like the US. South Africa - is one of the top nations in the world for economy inequality and c00ns and puppets and white controlled blacks. They have something called Black Economic Empowerment - And I hope that works out for them.

Broad-Based Black Economic Empowerment or B-BBEE:

Code 100 – Ownership
Code 200 – Management & Control
Code 300 – Employment Equity
Code 400 – Skills Development
Code 500 – Preferential Procurement
Code 600 – Enterprise Development
Code 700 – Socioeconomic development
Codes 800 – 807 - Qualifying Small Enterprises

I dont know a great deal about Africa.

But from an outsider looking in, they need better leadership. If they had stronger leadership, they could probably better utilize the things they do have going for them in order to prosper. Commodities and tourism...they could eventually possibly become a manufacturing hub for those commodities.

Despite him being an a$$hole...i think kqhqhadffphi and mandela could have spurred this movement. I honestly dont know who could do it now...outside forces can just exploit africa in its current fractured state because there is no leadership. Whats a little ethnic tension if your raking in billions, ya knameen!
