As far as the rappers who have debuted in the last decade, Rick Ross is one of the only ones who is maintaining as a top tier and commercially successful rapper without necessarily appealing to the two most influential consumers of music

1) white people
2) black women

Rozay really makes boss music that deals with themes such as money, power, respect, and success, etc. His primary demographic is Black/African-American urban males. This might be the reason why he's yet to hit that platinum mark yet he's still consistent with his numbers and continues to show he's relevant and has staying power within the genre.

I don't think his music is lacking anything but he should really reveal more of who he is and get personal at some point. All the life stories of the greatest rappers and icons are commonly known by the masses. With Ross we don't really know much about his past other than the CO stuff (which didn't come out intentionally).

According to The Coli, Ross lacks:

Substance
Authenticity
Meaningful songs
Diversity
Realness

With that being said, Ross has still managed to sustain a consistent career of over six years. How does this happen to a rapper that lacks so much?

The only elements Rick Ross lacks are mass appeal and crossover records. Everything else can be argued.
Same way Tity Boi reinvented himself as a worse rapper than when he left

Mainstream fans these days are stupid as fukk

How much do I need hear from a trash rapper to make a decision? I gotta listen to 5 Plies or Nelly cds to make a judgement on wackness now? Fukk outtahere.

People really don't know his story like that... I mean if u compare him to the mainstream rappers who have been relevant for a longer time than him, everyone knows their stories a lot better.

Hov
Em
Nas
Kanye

shyt, even 50, Wayne & Game. Even if 50 & Game ain't relevant like that anymore. They all have rapped more about their lives than Ross... All people basically know about Ross is that he was a co, that he possibly sold drugs & that he used to ghostwrite for some other artists. I mean u can't expect some crazy honest/deep shyt from every artist out there but Ross is a good writer so I'm sure he could come up with deeper songs about his life, family or something like that if he wanted to. He has some which are almost there but not really compared to all the other mainstream rappers who have been relevant for years.

Some of yall will say this is a corny suggestion (I really dont care though :manny:) but he should drop an album (or mixtape if he doesn't wanna put out an album like that) called "William Leonard Roberts II" where he'd just drop the Rick Ross "image" for a minute & rap about more personal shyt. I mean how dope it would be to hear that type of content over some soulful production he uses?

Just my opinion :yeshrug: I mean he's doing more than well so he doesn't need to change anything but I would love to hear that as a hip hop fan.

Aspiring mc's should look at the top ten selling rappers off all-time. They will see that most of the rappers on that list let us enter their lives. Rappers copy all ish all the time. Why not copy what Pac Em Jay X 50 did tellin their story? Hell i hate Wayne music, but i know tons of ish about his upbringing. So when Wayne makes songs like "Set this stage on fire"( i think thats da name) or that song about his pops he made a video for. I feel that ish. That type of ish brings fan closer to u.But i guess its a good thing Ross dont make many personal tracks. We dont need a million Buddens in the world.

Exactly. Ross should do better numbers because he crossed that threshold.

Jeezy never reached this level of popularity.

1) Ross has access to the hottest producers in the game.
2) Ross has access to the most popular crew in the game with Young Money.
3) Ross is all over the radio (what's the last song Jeezy had all over the radio?)

I think Ross is trash, but he is killing it in every statistical category. :smh: @ lames saying Ross lacks feeling, most rappers do. And those are the only rappers selling these days anyway.

Jeezy worked with some producers like Justice League before Ross did. And at his peak Jeezy was all over the radio too on remixes too. And fukk YM, Jeezy had access to Kanye and Jeezy when both were in or near their prime.

My opinion may be a little biased but I ride for Ross what you see is what you get. He has always been that way. The Ross you see on the screen is the same Will he has always been. I think he is shytting on a lot of artist but he wont have longevity or following he needs if he doesn't go platinum.

A high Urban Fantasy score..I mean if there was an Urban Fantasy draft I don't think suburb cacs would make him a top 10 pick..

Great post.

And I feel the reason for this, is his lyrics dont feel genuine

Sure every rapper has embellished and flat out lied about their past, but he got caught, plain and simple

He should at least try and build some type of narrative around it, or explain why he COd

He will never be a great if he doesnt show any type of vulnerability or remorse. It just makes him a "character". Everyone else (Nas, Big, Pac, Jay, Scarface, Ice Cube, everyone) has done this to a degree

So did you judge TuPac Shakur after listening to 2Pacalypse Now and Strictly 4 My N.I.G.G.A.Z.? Dont even worry about answering that question CAC
