Florida man fatally shot after giving out money, paying for meals at Waffle House

GAINESVILLE, Fla. (AP/WSVN) — Authorities in Florida say a 41-year-old man was fatally shot after he got into an argument with a man at a restaurant.

The Alachua County Sheriff’s Office says Craig Brewer was shot and killed early Sunday at a Waffle House restaurant in Gainesville, Florida, located about four miles from the University of Florida campus.

According to Fox 35, deputies said Brewer was paying for some customers’ meals and passing out $20 bills.

“This is an individual that has a family, and how this went from something that could have been good to something so tragic so fast, we simply have to find that out,” Lt. Brett Rhodenizer told Fox 35.

Investigators said a female customer reportedly got into a verbal altercation with Brewer because he did not pay for her meal.

The sheriff’s office said 25-year-old Ezekiel Hicks, who was at the restaurant with the woman, also got involved in the argument.

Investigators said Hicks went outside and grabbed a hand gun, went back inside, argued with Brewer again and shot Brewer in the head.

Surveillance video captured the shooting.

Hicks was arrested near the restaurant.

Online records show he faces first-degree murder and unlicensed firearm charges. No attorney was listed for him.

Florida nears 2-millionth concealed weapon permit

Associated Press

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) — Already leading the nation with the highest number of concealed weapon permits, Florida is nearing a new threshold: granting authority to 2 million civilians who can lawfully carry guns tucked in waistbands, under jackets or inside purses into restaurants, shopping malls and elsewhere.

Sometimes called the “Gunshine State,” Florida had a total of 1,971,997 currently valid concealed weapon permits as of March 31, according to the latest figures from the Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services. The number grows about 17,500 each month. Additionally 12,745 judges, correctional officers, military or law enforcement officials hold permits in Florida.

At the current rate, Florida – with its population of 21.3 million people – was expected to surpass the 2-million mark for civilians before summer, said Stephen Hurm, director of licensing at the state agency that issues permits.

Florida already leads the United States in total number of currently valid permits, according to data from the Crime Prevention Research Center, a Virginia-based nonprofit that is pro-gun rights and studies gun ownership, crime and public safety. Texas has the second-highest number, at 1.36 million as of December, according to figures from that state’s Department of Public Safety.

Maribeth Porter Williams, 36, of Gainesville obtained her permit after shooting at a local range. She enrolled in a five-hour class covering safety and Florida’s laws at Harry Beckwith Guns & Range in Micanopy, just south of the city. She received her permit after spending time on the firing range, submitting her fingerprints and clearing a criminal background check.

“I can certainly protect myself or defend my home, but really I enjoy going to the gun range and shooting,” Williams said.

Although the overall violent crime rate nationally has been on a downward trend since the 1990s, Florida has been the site of at least seven mass shootings in the past three years. The National Rifle Association’s top lobbyist in Florida, Marion Hammer, said the figures for concealed weapons permits here reflected perceptions about public safety.

“It’s not safe out there and people are taking responsibility of their own safety and the safety of their families,” Hammer said.

Unlike most other states, it is illegal in most circumstances to openly carry a gun in public in Florida. The state requires prospective permit-holders to be at least 21, undergo training, demonstrate they can safely fire a gun on a range, submit fingerprints to the state and have no felony criminal record. The permit, which resembles a driver’s license, initially costs about $100 and remains valid for seven years. It takes about two months to receive a permit after applying.

Felons or applicants with convictions for domestic violence or a record of drug or alcohol abuse are ineligible. Since July, Florida denied 6,430 people who sought permits.

Florida’s permit covers weapons, not just guns, including knives or stun guns. Permit-holders are still not allowed to carry guns in schools, post offices, court buildings, airport terminals, police stations or on university campuses.

Florida’s figures mean about 12% of the adult population here has a permit. Eleven other states have higher rates of permit-holders, including Alabama and Utah.

The relatively high number of residents who can legally carry concealed guns in Florida generally doesn’t disturb anti-gun activists, since the backgrounds of permit-holders are scrutinized and they are required to participate in education and safety classes.

“I wish it was that process for every single person that got a firearm,” said Brandon Wolf, a survivor of the 2016 shooting at the Pulse Nightclub in Orlando that killed 49 people and wounded 53 others. “Today, someone who shouldn’t have a gun can go to their second cousin and say ‘Hey, sell me that gun for $1,000 cash,’ and the law today does not deter that person from selling that firearm.”

Wolf criticized what he described as the “wildly unregulated and inconsistent” process to buy guns in Florida.

Democratic lawmakers in Florida have proposed tightening gun regulation, but with a Republican majority in both chambers, that is unlikely. Republicans have sponsored a bill, SB1238, to allow religious institutions and private schools to authorize people to carry guns in their facilities.

“I’m encouraged that more people take responsibility for themselves and others because law enforcement can’t be there,” said Sen. Dennis Baxley, R-Lady Lake. “The violence is not in the firearm, the violence is in the heart of the person.”

Florida teen arrested for trying to ‘RKO’ his principal
By Chris Perez

April 11, 2019 | 11:30pm | Updated

Somewhere, Randy Orton is smiling.

A Florida teenager was arrested this week after he attempted to hit the WWE superstar’s signature move — an RKO — on his high school principal.

Gianny Sosa, 18, was charged with battery on a school employee and granted release from jail Thursday without bond following a brief court appearance.

His defense attorney, Roy Ugarte, called the teen’s arrest report “hands down one of the most insane” he’d ever read.

“Everyone knows wrestling is fake,” Ugarte said in court, according to the Miami Herald.

“It shouldn’t have been arrestable.”

Sosa, a senior at Miami Southridge Senior High, was caught on video attempting the wrestling move on his principal, Humberto Miret. He can be heard yelling “RKO!” right before attempting to grab Miret’s neck.

Ugarte claims Sosa was just horsing around and didn’t intend on actually attacking Miret. The teen has posted videos on his Instagram page in which he performs RKOs on random things and acts wild in public.

As part of his character, Orton — aka “the Viper” — has been sneaking up on wrestlers for years and hitting his finishing move “outta nowhere” as he famously puts it. The act has been a huge hit among fans, who’ve given it the meme treatment on social media.

“Randy would be proud,” joked an Instagram user who shared Sosa’s RKO video on Thursday.

“Way too obvious,” another user said, noting how Sosa shouldn’t have shouted RKO. “It needed to be out of nowhere.”

Are there seriously stray gators in Florida? :dwillhuh:

Yes, they can get into areas they shouldn't be. People have had them in their pools, under their cars, etc. They usually avoid people, more than people avoid them. I've been around a bunch at random times near lakes, golf courses and canals.

There's also places like this

3 naked women at rest stop lead deputies on chase in Florida

Associated Press

DADE CITY, Fla. (AP/WSVN) — Authorities say three women who were applying suntan lotion publicly in the nude at a Florida rest stop led police on a 21-mile chase, drove a car at a deputy and threatened another deputy with a bat.

The Florida Highway Patrol says when a deputy approached the women at the Interstate 75 rest stop Wednesday in Dade City, they started dressing.

They said they had been staying at a relative’s home but went to the rest stop after an altercation and had nowhere else to go. The Tampa Bay Times reports the women claimed they were “air drying” after washing up. The women then fled in a car.

According to the report, the trio inlcuded 18-year-old Oasis Shakira McLeod, who was allegedly behind the wheel of the car and two 19-year-olds, Jeniyah McLeod and Cecilia Eunique Young.

The three were ultimately were caught after a trooper was able to launch a GPS tracking device on the car, which allowed troopers to keep a distance and ultimately track them down.

They’ve been charged with aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer, resisting arrest, fleeing to elude and indecent exposure.

Plenty of people get meats from here....Personally I think the place is nasty. Remember seeing a 3 to 4 inch dead roach on it's back in the window at the Margate location way back. Place smelled like a cesspool too.

Clarese Gainey explains how she slugged a 300-pound, half-naked attacker with a bat at her Gainesville home Sunday.

GAINESVILLE, Fla. (WGFL) — It was early Sunday morning when 65-year-old Clarese Gainey heard a noise outside her apartment. As she looked out the window, she says she saw a man in his boxers pulling at her car door handle and knocking on the window, attempting to break in. Before calling police, she took matters into her own hands.

"I grab my bat, I brace myself, and I ease the door open," Gainey said.

That's when police and Gainey say 5'6, 300 pound Antonio Moselycharged her.

"I took that bat and hit him upside the head like 'pi-yah!' He said 'Ow!'"

That's when police say Mosely ran to a nearby mobile home park, leaving behind his pants, shirt and a sock. A K-9 unit tracked him inside a mobile home where they say he was wearing a new pair of pants with cocaine in its pocket.

Officers brought Mosely back to Gainey to identify him. She says she could easily identify him by not only his appearance, but the injury to his head.

Mosely is being held in the Alachua County Jail with two counts of burglary and drug possession.

"He better be glad I didn't have a gun," Gainey said. "Because I would have shot him. But this is my gun right here (baseball bat). Because I gone 'Pi-yow!'"

Fake officer pulls over a real undercover officer in Florida
Courtesy: Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office
Associated Press

PLANT CITY, Fla. (AP) — Authorities say a Florida man impersonating an officer flipped the red and blue lights on his SUV while unknowingly trying to stop a car with a real officer.

The Tampa Bay Times reports 26-year-old Matthew Erris was arrested on a charge of impersonating a public officer.

An arrest report says Erris turned on the red and blue lights on his SUV in Plant City, Florida to try to stop the car in front of him.

The driver was an undercover Hillsborough County sheriff’s detective in an unmarked car. He didn’t pull over. Instead he called dispatchers to alert other deputies, who later stopped Erris.

Erris admitted he installed the lights and used them to get through heavy traffic.

Jail records did not list an attorney for Erris.
