most of the muslims i know are very dedicated and disciplined in their pursuits of life, of course, to each their own, but generalizing almost always leads to imprecise analysis.
to them, and to many other religions, making it to the proper afterlife is critical for various reasons. many religions preach about the perils of the material world and have a faith based structure in place that is designed to stay focused on the spiritual, leading to this 'living in the dark ages'. the untouchables of hinduism is a good example.
im not a religious zealot by any means, but claiming facts over faith, with certainty, is a bit short sighted friend. it appears as though you have much faith in these so called 'facts', and science as a whole, yet many of these 'facts' and products of science are being continuously changed and amended throughout time. there is always more to be explored, which means there will always be something that is unexplained, and to many, that is how religion ends up fitting into their lives. preaching science this and science that while simultaneously and comprehensively discarding faith based beliefs is just the equivalent and reverse of vatican targeting throughout most of its history. you may be using more advanced technology than some of them, but your logic is just as in the dark ages as the stereotypical muslims that you presented.
